  • Patent number: 5368042
Abstract: A swinging movement in an impact sport activity, such as golf, tennis, baseball or the like, can be monitored to analyze the skill of the player by a biofeedback mechanism which measures electrical impulses created by activated nerves as muscles tense. The mechanism includes a band adapted to be placed about an arm and/or leg of the player, the band includes a pair of electrodes adapted to contact the muscle, differential amplifier means accepting the electrical voltage from the muscle, means for measuring the amplified voltage, and reporting means affording an indication of the results of the swing, such recorder including a sound emitting device, or a transmitter and computer, recording device, or printer. Preferably, the mechanism also includes a device for signalling the point of impact with an object.

  • Patent number: 5342682
Abstract: A method for fabricating in a mold a rotatable recording drum is disclosed. Initially, the mold is rotated and a predetermined quantity of a flowable substance is poured into the mold cavity and is centrifugally flung against the mold wall to form a mold layer with a smooth inner surface. Next, a surface substance is poured into the mold cavity and is allowed to harden against the mold layer. A core outer layer substance is then poured into the mold cavity and allowed to harden against the surface substance, and rotation of the mold is stopped. The mold layer fluid is removed, and the cavity inside the outer layer is filled with a core inner layer substance which is allowed to harden before the drum core is removed from the mold cavity. Following removal of the core from the mold cavity, the hardened surface substance may be vacuum coated, and a protective overcoat applied to the core. The drum core and the surface substance can also be formed separately.

  • Patent number: 5268950
Abstract: A conductive coating on a thin glass strip senses the image signal on a selenium coated photoimaging plate as the plate is scanned with a laser beam. The glass strip is suspended over the surface of the plate with finger-like members. The finger-like members that support the strip are spring loaded downward toward the plate, but are suspended above the plate by a pressurized cushion of air. The strip bends to assume the surface profile of the plate, thus maintaining uniform spacing even though the plate may not be flat and may even have a varying profile along its length.

  • Patent number: 5149951
Abstract: The present invention is an apparatus and method for aligning a card with optically readable annular data region thereon. The card is moved along a generally linear track and pushed onto a rotatable card holder which is secured in a first position for receiving the card. The data card is aligned on the card holder so that the annular data region thereon is in a desired registry with a focused laser beam. The card holder and card thereon are then rotated about a central axis of the annular data region and the laser beam is moved across the annular data region of the rotating card for data transfer. Once the desired data transfer is accomplished, the card holder rotation is stopped, the card holder is realigned in its first position and the card removed from the card holder. During rotation of card holder, a plurality of flyweights flatten the data card as a function of the rate of rotation of the card holder.

  • Patent number: 4939715
Abstract: An apparatus for reading and recording information on a tape record medium has the tape wound and advanced along a helical path on the outer cylindrical surface of the drum. A system for writing and reading information on the tape is positioned entirely on the outside of the drum and is stationary relative to the rotation of the drum and movement of the tape thereon. Tape is supplied to the helical path on the drum by one or more tape reels rotatably mounted within the drum and aligned coaxially with the rotational axis of the drum. The drum and tape thereon are rotated at a high rate relative to the stationary read/write system, and the tape is advanced along the helical path at a relative slow rate. The drum and tape thereon are configured in the form of a cartridge, removeable as a unit from the optical system.

  • Patent number: 4525696
Abstract: A driver for rotating a magnetic head affixed thereto having a housing, an armature rotably mounted within the housing, at least two field magnets within the housing and positioned around the axis of rotation for the armature, a driving coil and a concentrator for concentrating the magnetic flux from the field magnets so as to return the armature to a home position when no current is applied to the driving coil. The driver is affixed in the housing concentric with at least a portion of the armature such that a current passing through the driving coil develops a magnetic field polarizing the armature and causing a peripherential attraction of the armature toward an adjacent one of the field magnets and a corresponding repulsion of the armature from an adjacent other of the field magnets, thereby tending to rotate the armature a direction and distance proportional to the magnitude and polarity of the current.

  • Patent number: 4381491
Abstract: A device for slowing down the movement of the armature within a solenoid comprising a resilient container having a predetermined internal volume, and a dilatant material filling the container which material has as one of its properties at ambient temperatures, a non-resilient deformation when subjected to slow steady state stress, and a highly resilient resistance to deformation when subjected to rapid shock-like stress, whereby the container is connected to the solenoid in a manner affording its compression as the armature moves within the solenoid.

  • Patent number: 4291956
Abstract: A device for composing graphics comprising a flash lamp for irradiating portions of strip material through a template when an arm supporting the lamp is moved to an exposure position at an exposure station. The template is pressed against the strip at the exposure station between a resilient frame-mounted pad and a transparent plate on the lamp arm by a toggle linkage between the frame and the arm. The template has a rectangular array of windows and is manually positionable on locating pins at the exposure station for different exposures. A positive image of each window is provided on the template, and the locating pins are movable via movement of the lamp arm from a preview position where the image is at the exposure station so the operator can see where the graphic will be formed to an exposure position with the associated window located at the exposure station for exposure.
