Publication number: 20020172053Abstract: An exterior mirror assembly for a vehicle includes a signal light that provides an advanced notification system to approaching vehicles that the driver of the vehicle intends to turn or make a lane change. The exterior mirror assembly includes a housing with a reflective element and a positioning device for adjusting the position of the reflective element in the housing, and at least one signal light positioned in the housing. The signal light includes a light source and a light conduiting member which is adapted to project a pattern of light from the housing and yet restrict light from extending into the vehicle so that a driver seated in the vehicle does not directly observe the pattern of light. The light source may be provided by a light pipe which is optically coupled to a remote light source located, for example, in the vehicle. Preferably, the pattern of light extends at least rearwardly and laterally from the vehicle.Type: ApplicationFiled: July 8, 2002Publication date: November 21, 2002Applicant: Donnelly Corporation, a corporation of the State of MichiganInventors: Todd W. Publication number: 20020141085Abstract: An extendable exterior rearview mirror assembly includes a mounting bracket, a mirror subassembly, and a support which is supported by the mounting bracket. The mirror subassembly is supported by the support and is mounted for selective movement along the support arm to one of a plurality of viewing positions. The mirror subassembly includes a housing, a reflective element, and an actuator which supports the reflective element on a forward facing wall of the housing. The rearview mirror assembly further includes a clamping assembly which provides a force to urge frictional engagement between the housing and the support to limit movement of the mirror subassembly along the support. In preferred form, the support extends into the housing and frictionally engages an exterior surface of the forward facing wall.Type: ApplicationFiled: May 17, 2002Publication date: October 3, 2002Applicant: Donnelly Corporation, a corporation of the State of MichiganInventors: Peter J. Patent number: 6243218Abstract: A mirror actuator is provided for an exterior rearview mirror assembly. The mirror actuator comprises a non-armature electrical motor. Preferably, the mirror actuator comprises an ultrasonic motor. The mirror actuator is useful as a powerfold exterior mirror actuator to pivot a folding portion of a mirror assembly about a base or non-folding portion attached to the vehicle. The mirror actuator preferably comprises a traveling wave ultrasonic motor and causes rotation of a rotating member attached to the folding portion of the mirror via a traveling wave generated along a driving disc or stator. The ultrasonic motor provides a sufficient torque to the folding portion of the mirror, such that worm gears and other gearing mechanisms are not required to generate additional torque. The mirror actuator may also be useful as a reflective element positioning actuators to adjust an angle of the reflective element of the mirror relative to the housing of the mirror assembly.Type: GrantFiled: September 29, 1999Date of Patent: June 5, 2001Assignee: Donnelly CorporationInventor: Peter J. Patent number: 5949591Abstract: A vehicle exterior rearview mirror assembly provides a break-away housing which exhibits increased dampening, reduce vibration, and consistent break-away force while requiring simplified tooling to manufacture. The mirror assembly includes a housing having a reflective element supported and a mounting bracket adapted for mounting to a vehicle. The mounting bracket includes a pivot extending between the mounting bracket and the housing, for pivotally mounting the housing to the mounting bracket. The mounting bracket and housing include a plurality of detent assemblies for releasably coupling the housing to the mounting bracket. At least two detent assemblies have a longitudinal extent which is substantially parallel to a line which extends through a center of rotation of the pivot. Preferably, the at least two detent assemblies are positioned on opposite sides of the pivot and are positioned on opposed sides of mounting bracket.Type: GrantFiled: December 19, 1997Date of Patent: September 7, 1999Assignee: Donnelly CorporationInventor: Peter J. Patent number: 4755033Abstract: An exterior rearview mirror for a motor vehicle has a housing mounted on a base member by means of a ball-and-socket joint comprising a socket formed in the base member and a convex member attached to the housing. The socket comprises the concave inner surface of a hollow part-spherical member. An arm has a concave surface formed on one end and adapted to engage with the convex outer surface of the part-spherical member. Resilient means are arranged to bias the arm towards the convex member so as to urge the concave surface on the arm against the convex outer surface of the part-spherical member and to urge the concave inner surface of the part-spherical member against the convex member, and release means on the other end of the arm are operable to reduce the friction resisting movement of the housing relative to the base member about the part-spherical member. Operation of the release means thus enables the orientation of the housing relative to the base member to be adjusted with relatively little effort.Type: GrantFiled: June 17, 1987Date of Patent: July 5, 1988Assignee: Britax Wingard LimitedInventors: Peter J. Whitehead, Ian Boddy

Patent number: 4740066Abstract: An exterior mirror for a vehicle comprises a base member attached to the vehicle body, first pivotal engagement means mounted on an arm secured to the base member so as to project laterally in the opposite direction to the mounting face, a housing for a reflective member having second pivotal engagement means. Resilient means extend between a point on the base member which is nearer to the mounting face than the pivot axis and a chain comprising a first link and a second link. The first link is pivotally attached to the base member at one end and pivotally attached to the second link at the other end, the resilient means being pivotally attached to an intermediate point on the second link. A cam surface on the second link is urged by the resilient means into engagement with a projection on the base member located between the pivot axis and the point of connection of the first link to the base member.Type: GrantFiled: October 14, 1986Date of Patent: April 26, 1988Assignee: Britax (Wingard) LimitedInventor: Peter J.
