Patent number: 7245710Abstract: A teleconferencing system comprises a conference bridge having a multichannel connection to each customer equipment. The customer equipment has a unit to separately process each channel to provide one output representing each of the other participants. These outputs can be combined in a spatializer to provide a spatialized output in which each participant is represented by a virtual sound source. The conference bridge comprises a concentrator, having a unit to identify the currently active input channels and to transmit only those active channels over the multichannel connection, together with control information identifying the transmitted channels.Type: GrantFiled: April 7, 1999Date of Patent: July 17, 2007Assignee: British Telecommunications public limited companyInventor: Peter James Hughes

Patent number: 6931123Abstract: An audio conferencing system in which each participant in the conference generates a monaural signal for transmission on an output channel to the other participants, and receives a plurality of input channels from the other participants. The input channels are individually converted to stereophonic signal pairs by respective filter banks having selected predetermined transfer functions. The stereo channels are combined linearly to provide a stereophonic audio output. The system has an echo cancellation system in which an adaptive filter process is applied to the input channels to generate a combined echo cancellation signal for applying to the output channel.Type: GrantFiled: April 7, 1999Date of Patent: August 16, 2005Assignee: British Telecommunications public limited companyInventor: Peter James Hughes

Patent number: 6771743Abstract: A voice processing system, method and computer program product therefor, allows telephone callers without computers to access World Wide Web pages from the Internet. Usual graphical-based Hyper-Text Mark-Up language (HTML) commands are interspersed with special HTML tags including the commands and data for forming a voice application, which, when run on the voice processing system, provides a voice browser for allowing telephone callers to access Web pages. The voice application tags are provided together with the remainder of the HTML document, thus facilitating editing of the combined data. This helps to keep the graphical browser and voice browser versions of the same data set synchronized.Type: GrantFiled: August 12, 1997Date of Patent: August 3, 2004Assignee: International Business Machines CorporationInventors: Nicholas David Butler, Jeremy Peter James Hughes, Stephen Graham Copinger Lawrence, Susan Malaika, Lawrence Leon Porter

Patent number: 6453020Abstract: A voice processing system comprising a digital trunk processor 135 and a system unit 145 incorporates a local voice recognition resource 185 provided on a digital signal processing board 180, and can access a remote voice recognition resource 320 in a server 300 via a local area network 250. The system provides a barge-in facility for the recognition resource on the remote server, whereby a prompt is played out to the user, and the incoming telephony signal is fed into a voice activity detector on the digital trunk processor. Responsive to a detection of incoming voice activity, the outgoing prompt is terminated, and the incoming data is transferred over the local area network to the remote server for recognition.Type: GrantFiled: February 23, 1998Date of Patent: September 17, 2002Assignee: International Business Machines CorporationInventors: Jeremy Peter James Hughes, Brian Hulse, Caroline Edith Maynard, John Brian Pickering, Hoyt McClure Stewart, Mark George Stewart Reid Thomas

Patent number: 6088361Abstract: A bus connection controller in a voice processing is for managing the connection of a timeslot on a time-division multiplex (TDM) bus to a port on an adapter. The voice processing system includes basic time-division multiplex (TDM) connection management to enable the coordination of connections between resources such as channels on line cards (SPacks or VPacks), and channels on digital signal processor (DSPs) cards that provide, amongst others things, voice recognition, text-to-speech, fax capabilities and so on. One of the problems with known voice processing systems having a TDM bus is that there is no facility to allow the use of third party devices without modifications being made to the TDM connection controller.Type: GrantFiled: August 28, 1997Date of Patent: July 11, 2000Assignee: International Business Machines Corp.Inventors: Jeremy Peter James Hughes, Robert Michael Jordan, Caroline Edith Maynard

Patent number: 5930780Abstract: A method is described for performing distributed genetic programming using a server and a plurality of client machines which are connected together by a computer network such as the Internet. The genetic programming seeks to optimise a population of individuals against one or more predetermined fitness criteria. The method includes downloading instructions for performing a fitness evaluation on an individual from the server to the client machines; distributing individuals from the population of individuals from the server across the plurality of client machines; and evaluating the fitness of the distributed individuals at the client machines by using the downloaded instructions. Those individuals which have the best fitness are preferentially selected for breeding to produce the next generation of individuals. This breeding is preferably also performed on the client machines.Type: GrantFiled: February 27, 1997Date of Patent: July 27, 1999Assignee: International Business Machines Corp.Inventors: Jeremy Peter James Hughes, Bahadar Singh Ruprai
