  • Patent number: 8477099
Abstract: A portable data processing apparatus is provided. It has at least one data processing function which depends on detected motion of the apparatus. The apparatus comprises a video camera operable to capture successive images of a part of the real environment around the apparatus; a video motion detector operable to detect motion of the apparatus by analysis of image motion between pairs of captured images; a hardware motion detector operable to detect motion of the apparatus, whereby the data processing function depends on motion detected by the hardware motion detector; and a controller operable to adjust the operation of the hardware motion detector if the motion detected by the video motion detector and the motion detected by the hardware motion detector differ by at least a threshold difference.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: December 28, 2010
Date of Patent: July 2, 2013
Assignee: Sony Computer Entertainment Europe Limited
Inventors: Jonathan Webb, Matthew Brooks, Greame Ankers, Peter John Marshall
  • Patent number: 8135066
Abstract: Data processing apparatus arranged to receive successive images from a video camera and to receive audio data from a microphone comprises means for detecting inter-image motion in the video images; means for detecting audio signals in the associated audio data satisfying one or more predetermined audio criterion; and activation means, for activating a control function of the data processing apparatus in response to a predetermined sequence of a detection of inter-image motion satisfying one or more predetermined motion criterion and a detection of an audio signal in the associated audio data which satisfies the predetermined audio criteria.
    Type: Grant

  • Publication number: 20110157053
Abstract: A portable electronic device comprises a display on a first, front side of the device, a touch sensitive surface on a second, rear side of the device substantially opposite the first side having a similar shape and orientation to the display, and a touch input mapping means arranged to map a position of a detected touch on the touch sensitive surface to a position on the display and, a tapping detection means. The tapping detection means is arranged in operation to detect a tap as when there has been a loss and reacquisition of touch from a user on the touch sensitive surface. And the tapping detection means is arranged in operation to detect the position of the detected tap on the touch sensitive surface as being the position at which touch was lost.

  • Patent number: 7586502
Abstract: Data processing apparatus arranged to receive successive images from a video camera comprises means for detecting inter-image motion in an image region associated with a control function of the data processing apparatus; and means for initiating the control function if inter-image motion is detected in the image region in respect of at least a threshold number of the images within a test group of the images.

  • Patent number: 4042242
Abstract: In a toy target, target figures are rotated about a horizontal axis at a controlled speed by a gravitationally driven escapement mechanism. The figures are carried by wire elements for pivotal movement between "upright" and "knocked down" positions, and devices which attach the figures to the elements are arranged to return the figures automatically to their upright positions after they have been knocked down.
