Patent number: 6774848Abstract: The present invention provides an antenna assembly (10) comprising a plurality of planar tiles (20). Each of the tiles carries a planar array of sets (22) of antenna elements (47-50) arranged to be operated as a phased array antenna. The tiles are arranged in an orientation which is conformal to a contour of an underlying structure. In use, only those tiles which are capable of communication in the steered direction are enabled, while those which are not capable of communicating in the steered direction are not used.Type: GrantFiled: June 27, 2002Date of Patent: August 10, 2004Assignee: Roke Manor Research LimitedInventor: Peter John Wright

Patent number: 6661375Abstract: A method is presented for operating a phased array antenna comprising a number of sub-arrays. The method comprises the steps of introducing phase offsets into signals received from/transmitted to each element in the antenna, to provide directional transmit or receive sensitivity in a first direction; summing signals received from each element in each sub-array to provide respective sub-array signals; introducing respective phase offsets into the respective sub-array signals to adjust the direction of maximum sensitivity within a sensitivity envelope defined by the phase offsets applied to each element of the antenna as a whole.Type: GrantFiled: February 15, 2002Date of Patent: December 9, 2003Assignee: Roke Manor Research LimitedInventors: Bryan Stephen Rickett, Peter John Wright, Nicholas Alfred Carter

Patent number: 5861840Abstract: An antenna system is comprised of a plurality of independently constructed and operated antenna units, upon which are mounted a plurality of transmit and receive antenna pairs. This structure provides a means for the antenna system to be arranged to provide substantially hemispherical radio coverage. By adjusting the phase of each version of a radio signal to the transmitter or received, the signal may be formed into a beam according to known techniques of directional beam forming providing the antenna system with directional gain. Additionally, using a plurality of transmit and receive antenna pairs reduces the energy transmitted by each transmit antenna alone to a level which permits a branch line coupler to be sufficient to orthogonally polarize the transmitted and received radio signals negating the requirement for the duplexing filter for duplex operation.Type: GrantFiled: October 7, 1996Date of Patent: January 19, 1999Assignee: Roke Manor Research LimitedInventors: Christopher John Tarran, Albert Kester Roberts, Peter John Wright, Charles Ralph Green

Patent number: 4108802Abstract: Polymers comprising repeating units which contain groupings of the formula --CH.sub.2 OOCR.sub.1, wherein R.sub.1 is hydrogen or alkyl with 1 to 14 carbon atoms and the --CH.sub.2 --group is directly bonded to a quaternary nitrogen atom. The polymers are useful in photographic materials as mordants for anionic compounds especially for anionic dyes.Type: GrantFiled: May 20, 1976Date of Patent: August 22, 1978Assignee: CIBA-GEIGY AGInventor: Peter John Wright

Patent number: 4098953Abstract: Film base material is provided which comprises a film of biaxially oriented synthetic linear polyester of highly hydrophobic character having superimposed thereon adherent to said film a subbing layer which contains a copolymer of vinylidene chloride, an alkyl acrylate or methacrylate, an allyl or methallyl component containing an active methylene group the monomer of which has the general formula ##STR1## wherein T is --CN or --COCH.sub.3, X is O, NH or S, and R is a hydrogen atom or methyl group and optionally at least one copolymerizable acid. The subbing layer improves the adhesion between the film support and the photographic emulsion layers and prevents the separation of the layers or frilling when the final photographic film is processed.Type: GrantFiled: July 14, 1976Date of Patent: July 4, 1978Assignee: Ciba-Geigy AGInventors: Peter John Wright, Geoffrey Michael Dodwell, David Francis Jennings
