  • Publication number: 20130071682
Abstract: Provided is a method of preparing a multi-phase particulate. The method includes: (1) blending together (a) a dispersed phase component of a metal, a metal oxide, an organometallic compound, salts thereof, and/or mixtures thereof, and (b) a bulk phase component of an inorganic material different from the dispersed phase component to form an admixture; and (2) dry-milling and/or compressing the admixture for a time and at a pressure sufficient to disperse the dispersed phase component in and bind the dispersed phase component to the bulk phase component, thereby forming a multi-phase particulate. Coating compositions including the multi-phase particulate also are provided.

  • Publication number: 20100261029
Abstract: Provided is a multi-phase particulate having a dispersed phase component dispersed in and bound to a bulk phase component. The dispersed phase component includes a metal, a metal oxide, an organometallic compound, salts thereof, and/or mixtures thereof, and the bulk phase component includes an inorganic material different from the dispersed phase component. The dispersed phase component is present in an amount ranging from 0.5 to 60 percent by weight based on total combined weight of the dispersed phase component and the bulk phase component. Related methods, compositions and composites also are provided.

  • Publication number: 20080152829
Abstract: A coating composition, comprising a film-forming component, a radiation curable group, and a matting agent, wherein, when the composition is deposited and treated to form a cured coating, the cured coating is characterized as having a higher concentration of the matting agent in a top half of the coating relative to a bottom half of the coating. Methods of treating a liquid radiation curable coating composition on a substrate are also disclosed, comprising applying an IR treatment to the liquid radiation curable coating composition, and applying a radiation curable treatment to the liquid radiation curable coating composition. The coating composition can provide improved properties, such as improved gloss, haze, flexibility, and/or chip resistance, when incorporated into a coating, or allow the use of less matting agent when compared to conventional coating compositions.

  • Publication number: 20030194549
Abstract: An abrasion resistant coating composition is disclosed. The coating composition comprises a unique blend of particles, including alumina that has been treated with an organosilane and silica that is either similarly treated or left untreated. The use of these particles in combination allows for a significant reduction in the weight percent of wear resistant particles that can impart a suitable level of abrasion resistance to a coating. The particles can be included, for example, in a urethane acrylate binder that can be cured using UV radiation. Methods for using these coatings are also disclosed.

  • Patent number: 6251999
Abstract: A catalytic tin carboxylate adduct, which is useful as a catalyst in epoxy-acid coating compositions, is the reaction product of (A) a mono-, di-, or poly-carboxylic acid functional compound and (B) an organotin compound containing one to three aryl groups and at least one halogen or hydroxyl group attached to the tin atom. There is also provided an epoxy-acid coating composition, which incorporates this catalytic tin carboxylate adduct. The epoxy-acid coating composition is advantageous as an automotive topcoat, particularly as a clear coat composition because it exhibits good appearance, durability, stability and generates no, or extremely low levels of benzene during the curing process.
