Abstract: Method and compositions for restoring the original color and texture to degraded wood surfaces comprising an aqueous solution of an alkali metal acid pyrophosphate and a surfactant. An organic acid having a relatively low coefficient of toxicity can be optionally incorporated into the wood treating compositions to enhance the cleaning capacity of the solution. The nonabrasive compositions are capable of removing embedded soil and stains from wood surfaces without altering the mechanical properties of the wood structure.
