    Abstract: A drive assembly for portable, hand-held, battery powered tools is provided. The tool may be configured as a crimping tool, a cutting tool or other type of tool. The tool has an in-line handle assembly and a working head assembly. The drive assembly includes a drive assembly housing, a gear assembly, a lead drive shaft and a bearing system. The gear assembly is a multi-stage gear assembly having an input tier and an output tier. The input tier is operatively connected to a motor and the output tier is connected to a lead drive shaft. The lead drive shaft has a proximal end extending into a distal end portion of the drive assembly housing. The bearing system is positioned within the drive assembly housing adjacent the output tier of the gear assembly. The bearing system is interactive with the lead drive shaft enabling the drive assembly to withstand radial and axial loads as the lead drive shaft is rotated during an operation of the tool.

Each jaw member can be tapered and can include weight reducing pockets defined in respective sidewalls. Each jaw member includes a raised tab on an outside edge that mates with a respective tab notch in a yoke of the neck portion of the handle assembly. When the locking pin is in an extended position, the jaw members of the tool can separate and rotate away from one another until their respective locking tabs engage their respective locking tab opening, connecting the jaw members to the yoke of the neck portion of the handle assembly.

When the working head is connected with the tool frame, a piston actuated by a hydraulic system within the tool frame applies force to the working head to perform a task. A coupling mechanism holds the working head to the tool frame. The coupling mechanism allows the working head to be removed from the tool frame and another working head to be joined to the tool frame. The coupling mechanism can hold the working head at a fixed rotational angle with respect to the tool frame. The coupling mechanism can also allow the working head to rotate with respect to the tool frame.
