  • Publication number: 20030230163
Abstract: A method of producing products of carbon steel or stainless steel in an electrical arc furnace-converter (8) with two metallurgical vessels (9; 10), wherein during melting, an electrode system (11) pivots above each vessel (9; 10), and during oxidation with oxygen, in each vessel, a top lance (12) and one or more side lances (13) are introduced, and wherein an immediate quality change from carbon melt to stainless melt or vice versa is effected by oxidation with oxygen with top lance (12) and/or by oxidation with oxygen with at least one side lance (13) or in reverse order during tapping periods which depend on operation of an immediately adjoining continuous casting machine (18), makes a time-independent change of the melting sequence possible.

  • Patent number: 6335945
Abstract: A smelting furnace system for smelting metals, especially steel scrap, with a lower furnace vessel, in the bottom of which a tap hole is provided, and with an upper furnace vessel, which can be closed by a cover, in which a central pipe is provided coaxially with respect to the main axis of the furnace, in which pipe at least one electrode is arranged, and on which pipe there is provided a component which encompasses the upper furnace vessel and can be connected to a gas offtake device. In this arrangement, a slit is provided in the wall of the central pipe in a longitudinal direction. A sleeve is fastened at the edge of the slit, allowing the central pipe to be fastened to the casing of the upper furnace vessel having a corresponding slit. Furthermore, a supporting arm, which is connected to a supporting pillar arranged outside the furnace, can be led through the hollow space of the sleeve into the central pipe, with at least one electrode fastened on the front face of this arm.

  • Patent number: 5961688
Abstract: A process and a steelmaking device for the metallurgical treatment of iron metals, especially for producing steel melts. To carry out metallurgical processing of iron metals, and especially to produce steel melts, in an energy-saving, environmentally friendly and economical fashion, all metallurgical processes are carried out in a single vessel. This vessel first functions as a converter and then, without the melt product being poured out, functions subsequently as an electric arc furnace.

  • Patent number: 5492309
Abstract: A steelworks apparatus includes a closed tiltable arc furnace for melting scrap and having a lower vessel part for containing the melt and an upper vessel part connected to an exhaust gas assembly and closed by a furnace roof. A sealable charging assembly is formed of at least two stack-like storage containers which are connected at their top ends to the exhaust assembly and which include gas-permeable, scrap-retaining flaps that are movable between open and closed positions at the bottom end of each respective storage container. A compensation component is located connectingly between the storage containers and the lower furnace vessel part for accommodating relative movements of and between the furnace and storage containers while gas-tightly preventing leakage or escape of gases from between the relatively moved or shifted structures during or as a result of operative tilting of the furnace.

  • Patent number: 4978105
Abstract: A steel mill system includes a metallurgical furnace and a further processing system such as a continuous casting system and/or one or more stations for treatment of the steel melt. At least one steel ladle is loaded with steel melt below the metallurgical furnace and is moved between the metallurgical furnace and the further processing system. The steel melt is then emptied into the further processing system. In the region of its upper half, the steel ladle is equipped with a carrying mechanism which includes diametrically oppositely disposed running wheels. The steel ladle is movable in a suspended position between the metallurgical furnace, and the further processing system on rails which are adapted to the carrying mechanism.

  • Patent number: 4909303
Abstract: A steel manufacturing system such as a mini-steel plant includes a series of treatment stations, one of which is a furnace which preferably receives scrap as the starting material. In order to significantly reduce the volume of the buildings needed for the steel manufacturing system, and thus the investment costs, the treatment stations are arranged in a furnace hall whose cross section is substantially adapted to the components of the treatment stations. With respect to the flow of material and the centers of the stations, each treatment stations is disposed along a straight line with an adjacent station. The steel manufacturing system also includes a continuous caster which is disposed in a casting hall and which receives molten steel from the furnace hall.

  • Patent number: 4736383
Abstract: In a method for melting a material selected from the group consisting of scrap or other similar materials with at least one melting furnace in a crucible equipped with electric arc heating, comprising directly pre-heating the material with the exhaust gases of the melting furnace and charging the material from the pre-heating vessel into a melting vessel prior to charging the heated scrap, each melting vessel is positioned below a stationary pre-heating vessel; and after charging the heated scrap, each melting vessel is positioned back above a stationary melting surface.
