  • Publication number: 20050288634
Abstract: A seal is disclosed for installation on a port of a medical device which preferably is a trocar. A seal in accordance with present invention has a first portion which has a bore and a first outer wall of a first thickness. The base of the first portion engages the port. A seal in accordance with the present invention has a second portion with a top and a passage through the top. The second portion has a second outer wall which is integral with the first outer wall and that has a thickness at its juncture with the first outer wall that is less than the thickness of the first outer wall.

  • Publication number: 20050209608
Abstract: A seal is disclosed for installation on the proximal end of a trocar to seal on surgical instruments having varying diameters. The seal has a general hourglass shape with an upper portion, a bottom portion and a sealing portion interposed between the upper and bottom portions. The bottom portion is formed for mating engagement with the access port at the proximal end of the trocar. A passage exists between the upper and bottom portions, and the diameter is expandable from 2 mm to about 13 mm. Various configurations of such a seal are disclosed.

  • Publication number: 20050203559
Abstract: The present invention provides an obturator tip having a rigid, elongated, distal section having a blunt, rounded, distal end designed to separate tissue. The distal section is connected to a proximal section by a central section having tapered outer surfaces. The obturator tip of the present invention is equipped with arc shaped blades positioned on opposite sides of the tip and 180 degrees apart from each other. In one embodiment, the arc shaped blades are positioned rearwardly with respect to the distal section of the obturator. This feature of the present invention allows the elongated distal section to create a small, non-cutting tissue separating track prior to blade contact with the patient.

  • Publication number: 20050203467
Abstract: A seal is disclosed for installation on the proximal end of a trocar. The seal is generally cylindrical in shape and has an upper portion and a lower portion. The lower portion is formed for mating engagement with the proximal end of the trocar. The upper portion comprises a central hole for insertion of a surgical instrument and a plurality of folds in proximity to the central hole. The folds allow the central hole to dilate and contract to seal on surgical instruments of varying diameters, and various configurations of folds are disclosed.

  • Publication number: 20050040065
Abstract: The present invention provides a medical kit having one or more obturators for use with a trocar. The obturator comprises a shaft having a distal or penetration end for insertion into a patient and a handling or proximal end for gripping by a surgeon. The penetration end of the shaft comprises a tip for cutting and/or separating tissue. The proximal end of the obturator having a handle member shaped to define a grasping portion having an orientation indicator thereon. The orientation indicator of the present invention providing the surgeon with the relative position of the tip of the obturator with respect to the shaft.

  • Publication number: 20050038466
Abstract: A trocar is disclosed which includes a housing assembly and a cannula assembly attached to the housing assembly to define an axial bore therethrough. The trocar further includes an obturator assembly which slidably engages the axial bore defined by the cannula assembly. The obturator assembly includes a shaft having a piercing end for insertion into a patient and a handling end for gripping by a surgeon. Attached to the piercing end of the shaft is a piercing tip having an upper face and a lower face which taper away from the shaft to form a non-conical, blunt head. The piercing tip further includes wing elements located on opposite sides of the piercing tip between the upper face and lower face. These wing elements have lateral edges.

  • Publication number: 20050033304
Abstract: An obturator tip for a trocar is disclosed. The obturator comprises a shaft having a distal or penetration end for insertion into a patient and a handling or proximal end for gripping by a surgeon. The penetration end of the shaft comprises a tip having an upper flat face and a lower flat face which taper away from the shaft toward the distal end. The tip further comprises flat side faces which also taper or slope from the shaft toward the distal end. A glide tip has a rounded end and extends outwardly along the side faces.
