  • Patent number: 7874789
Abstract: A housing is disclosed for a compressor having a duct defining a main gas flow axis and blades that draw a fluid through the duct. The blades impart to the fluid a momentum along a main gas flow direction and a swirl. The housing includes a volute configured to extend substantially circumferentially around and fluidly communicate with the duct (at a first location). The volute may be configured to direct a fluid portion flowing thereinto from the duct to have a velocity with a component in a first circumferential direction generally aligned with the swirl. The housing may also include at least one conduit, such as a pipe, in fluid communication with the first volute. The conduit may be configured to redirect the fluid portion to have a velocity with a first component along the main gas flow axis in a direction opposite the main gas flow direction and a second component in a second circumferential direction opposite to the first circumferential direction.

  • Patent number: 5325949
Abstract: A clutch or brake unit is described with an automatic wear adjustment mechanism.Clutches and brakes operate by the engagement of friction members (4,6) which experience wear in use requiring a larger stroke of the unit to effect engagement. This results in delayed clutch or brake operation which can be a serious disadvantage where prompt action is required. Conventionally this wear has been compensated by replacement of the worn friction members or by manual adjustment of them resulting in temporary disablement of the unit and requiring service personnel time.In the inventive unit, friction members (4,6) are mounted between pressure members (10,2) and an actuator (12) operates against a backing member (15) to effect clutch or brake actuation and de-activation by movement of the friction members towards and away from each other, and the position of at least one of the pressure members is adjusted automatically in response to wear of the friction members.

  • Patent number: 4619041
Abstract: A millimeter coupled cavity travelling wave tube has each of its slow wave structures formed of at least one longitudinally extending member having holes made therethrough by a hobbing process, which holes constitute at least in part the cavities of the slow wave structure. In a preferred embodiment a one and one only such longitudinally extending member is provided, the holes therein each a whole cavity. The hobbing is such that a buttress is left outstanding from each cavity facing surface of a cavity separating wall and the beam hole is bored axially through said member from end to end through said buttresses. After machining of the cavity coupling holes in the cavity separating walls (e.g. by spark erosion) the cavities are closed by plates brazed to opposite faces of the member.

  • Patent number: 4072877
Abstract: A travelling wave tube of the kind having clover leaf cavities is provided with a periodic permanent magnetic structure, in which the magnetic material is located within noses projecting into the cavity space. A barrier between the magnetic material and the cavity space defines an evacuated envelope. Because the magnetic material is within the volume swept out by the cavity dimensions, it is positioned very close to the electron beam path.
