Porous carbon materials and smoking articles and smoke filters therefor incorporating such materials
Patent number: 9907336Abstract: A porous carbon material suitable for incorporation in smoke filters for cigarettes has a BET surface area of at least 800 m2/g and a pore structure that includes mesopores and micropores. The pore volume (as measured by nitrogen adsorption) is at least 0.9 cm3/g and from 15 to 65% of the pore volume is in mesopores. The pore structure of the material provides a bulk density generally less than 0.5 g/cc. The material may be produced by carbonizing and activating organic resins and may be in the form of beads for ease of handling.Type: GrantFiled: March 27, 2006Date of Patent: March 6, 2018Assignee: BRITISH AMERICAN TOBACCO (INVESTMENTS) LIMITEDInventors: Maria Cashmore, Peter Rex White, Oleksandr Kozynchenko, Andrew Blackburn, Stephen Robert Tennison -
Publication number: 20150230519Abstract: A smoking article comprising a first part comprising a first ventilation area rotatable relative to a second part comprising a second ventilation area to control a level of ventilation by an overlap between the first and second ventilation areas. The first ventilation area and/or second ventilation area is configured such that the overlap has an increasing rate of change with respect to a rotational position. The second ventilation area overlaps with the first ventilation area from a first longitudinal position on the first part to a second longitudinal position on the first part. The first and second ventilation areas are configured such that the first and second longitudinal positions of the overlap increases in longitudinal distance along the smoking article from a mouth end as the level of ventilation increases.Type: ApplicationFiled: September 30, 2013Publication date: August 20, 2015Applicant: Beitish American Tobacco (Investments) LimitedInventors: Karl Kaljura, Peter Rex White

Patent number: 5954059Abstract: An extruded filtration material which is degradable and comprises either a plastics material or an inorganic material having a melting point above the operating temperature, a polysaccharide expansion medium, a binder and water. These ingredients are fed to an extruder and subjected to an extrusion process which involves a pressure reduction, upon extrusion from the exit die, of up to about 70 bars so that swelling of the extrudate occurs to give a cellular structure. When exposed to the natural weather conditions, tobacco smoke filter elements comprising such material degrade without leaving a fused amalgamation of plastics or inorganic material.Type: GrantFiled: March 8, 1994Date of Patent: September 21, 1999Assignee: British-American Tobacco Company LimitedInventors: John Lawson Beven, Paul David Case, Martin Coleman, Colin Campbell Greig, Peter Rex White
