  • Publication number: 20140138895
Abstract: An inserting machine and method for transporting newspapers is provided. The inserting machine includes a pocket conveyor having a plurality of interconnected pockets, each pocket having a fixed pocket wall, a movable pocket wall, a first side gripper, a second side gripper, a center gripper located between the first and second side grippers, at least one first suction opening on the fixed pocket wall and at least one second suction opening on the movable pocket wall. The at least one first and second suction openings coupled to a vacuum source. Hoppers are located above the pocket conveyor to feed inserts to the pockets in the pocket conveyor. The machine also includes a set of actuators for separately controlling movement of the movable pocket wall, the first side gripper, the second side gripper, and the center gripper, and for separately controlling application of a vacuum to the at least one first and second suction openings.

  • Publication number: 20130307207
Abstract: An inserter including a pocket for holding an unevenly folded printed product having a fold edge, a first section on a first side of the fold edge and a second section on a second side of the fold edge that is at least 20 percent shorter than the first section is provided. The pocket includes a lower support surface for supporting the fold edge, a first wall for supporting the first section and a second wall for supporting the second section. The first and second walls each have at least one cutout defined therein. The at least one cutout of the second wall includes a lower cutout edge that is less than a length of the second section away from the lower support surface. The inserter also includes a gripper for securely gripping unevenly folded printed product and removing the unevenly folded printed product from the pocket by passing through the at least one cutouts in the first and second walls. A method of inserting an insert into an unevenly folded printed product is also provided.

  • Patent number: 8434752
Abstract: A method for transporting newspapers includes the steps of feeding an asymmetrically folded multiple section newspaper into a pocket of a pocket conveyor of an inserting machine, wherein the asymmetrically folded multiple section newspaper has an extended lap having a height of at least 15% of a height of the asymmetrically folded newspaper when unfolded. A face of a first section of the headline side of the newspaper, when fed into the pocket is adjacent a movable wall of the pocket, and a back of a last section of the headline side of the newspaper adjacent a fixed wall of the pocket. The method further comprises feeding one or more inserts from a hopper to the pocket, where the inserts are fed into an opening between newspaper sections, removing the newspapers with the inserts therein from the pocket with a gripper conveyor, and releasing the newspapers with the inserts from the gripper conveyor headline up on a lapped stream conveyor.

  • Patent number: 5727783
Abstract: An apparatus for delivery of sheet-like products is provided which includes a reorientating conveyer 14 coupled to deceleration unit 6, the deceleration unit 6 for receiving signatures 5 from a product forming device such as a folding or a cutting cylinder. The deceleration unit 6 slows down the signatures 5 from a single spaced configuration to an overlapped shingled configuration. The reorientation conveyer 14 grips signatures in an overlapped shingled configuration with grippers 17, the grippers 17 having a pitch 16. Since the deceleration unit 6 does not release the signatures 5 until after the grippers 17 are engaged, control over the signatures is maintained during the transfer. In the reorientation conveyer 14, the grippers 17 rotate the signatures into a spine leading formation while maintaining control over the signatures 5.
