Patent number: 6615898Abstract: A release mechanism for protecting a sectional door under impact allows one or more door panels to breakaway from its guide track without damaging the door. The release mechanism includes a snap-in pin that can be selectively repositioned to provide various operating modes. Examples of operating modes include unidirectional release, bi-directional release, and a disabled mode. In some cases, the breakaway threshold is greater in one direction than another. In the disabled mode, the release mechanism is not meant to release. Some embodiments include a door locking mechanism that still allows the release mechanism to operate.Type: GrantFiled: May 30, 2001Date of Patent: September 9, 2003Assignee: Rite-Hite Holding CorporationInventor: Peter S. Patent number: 6598648Abstract: An impact sensing system for a powered roll-up door combines an electrical switch and a breakaway coupling. To avoid damage or injury resulting from the door's roll-up curtain accidentally closing upon an obstacle or something striking the curtain, the breakaway coupling responds to such a collision by breaking away, which releases a lower portion of the curtain from between its two vertical guide tracks. Each breakaway coupling includes a set of electrical contacts that make or break in response to the coupling breaking away. When the curtain's lower portion becomes effectively derailed from its guide track, the electrical contacts disable continued operation of the door to prevent the door's drive motor from jamming the curtain. In some embodiments, the breakaway coupling is releasably held together by way of magnetic attraction between two coupling segments, with one electrical contact on each segment to comprise one set of functional contacts.Type: GrantFiled: March 12, 1999Date of Patent: July 29, 2003Assignee: Rite-Hite Holding CorporationInventor: Peter S. Patent number: 6560927Abstract: A counteraction system for a sectional door includes a counterweight system that helps counterbalance the weight of the door and helps hold the door in place when the door is fully open. The counterweight system comprises a suspended string of individual deadweights. As the door opens, the weights sequentially lower onto the floor, in a stacked arrangement, one atop the other. Thus, the hanging weight of the counterweight system decreases as the door opens. To avoid having the counterweight system slam the door open against a hard stop, the counteraction system also includes a brake system that helps bring the door to a smooth stop at the door's fully open position. In some embodiments, the brake system includes a cable that traverses the direction that the door travels. As the door approaches its open position, a protrusion on the door catches the cable, which deflects to decelerate the door.Type: GrantFiled: May 30, 2001Date of Patent: May 13, 2003Assignee: Rite-Hite Holding CorporationInventor: Peter S. Publication number: 20030041980Abstract: A cable tensioner for an industrial door helps keep a cable neatly wrapped on its take-up drum. In some embodiments, the tensioner functions in a first mode during normal door operation, and operates in a second mode when the tension in the cable decreases to a predetermined low level. When operating in the second mode, the tensioner is able to take up slack in a cable that supports a door member, such as a door panel or a deadweight that counteracts the door panel's weight. The tensioner may be adapted for use on various doors including, but not limited to, sectional doors, roll-up doors, high-lift doors, horizontally storing doors, vertically storing doors, and various combinations thereof.Type: ApplicationFiled: September 6, 2001Publication date: March 6, 2003Inventors: Peter S. Patent number: 6089305Abstract: A curtain guiding assembly for an industrial door is disclosed. The curtain guiding assembly is provided with a resilient member disposed adjacent the leading edge of a door curtain. The resilient member is substantially untensioned when no external force is applied to the door curtain and is adapted to at least partially conform to or at least partially deflect about encountered obstacles. The resilient member becomes tensioned upon application of an external force less than a first predetermined threshold and returns to its substantially untensioned state upon removal of the external force.Type: GrantFiled: August 14, 1997Date of Patent: July 18, 2000Assignee: Rite-Hite Holding CorporationInventors: Wayne E. Gruben, Peter S. Schulte, James P. Schwingle

Patent number: 5957187Abstract: An omni-directional breakaway guide assembly for use in conjunction with an edge member in an industrial door. The guide assembly comprises a guide extension for engaging guide members to guide the door in a plane, and an edge member portion coupled to the edge member. The breakaway guide assembly includes a releasable coupling between the guide extension and the edge member portion. Upon application of a sufficient force on the edge member at least one of the edge member portion and the guide extension portion deforms to allow the edge member portion to breakaway from the guide extension portion. Such breakaway may occur for forces applied in a variety of directions to the edge member.Type: GrantFiled: July 24, 1996Date of Patent: September 28, 1999Assignee: Rite-Hite Holding CorporationInventors: Wayne E. Patent number: 5944086Abstract: A curtain edge tensioning assembly comprised primarily of a portion of the curtain extending across the leading edge of the door. The curtain portion is releasably coupled to a guide extension extending beyond the leading edge of the door and engaging guide members to guide the door in a plane. The guide extensions also engage the guide members to restrict the guide extensions from moving toward the center of the curtain. The releasable coupling between these horizontally restricted guide extensions and the resilient member places a tension on the curtain portion. The curtain portion is thus stretched across the door, and serves as a wind retention bottom bar or edge that also substantially conforms to or deflects around an obstruction, thus preventing or minimizing damage to the door, the bottom bar and the obstruction.Type: GrantFiled: July 24, 1996Date of Patent: August 31, 1999Assignee: Rite-Hite Holding CorporationInventors: Wayne E. Patent number: 5915448Abstract: A curtain bottom tensioning assembly comprised primarily of a resilient member extending across the bottom of the door. The resilient member is directly or indirectly coupled to a guide extension extending beyond the leading edge of the door and engaging vertical guide members to guide the door in a vertical plane. The guide extensions also engage the vertical guide members to restrict the guide extensions from moving horizontally toward the curtain. The coupling between these horizontally restricted guide extensions and the resilient member places a tension on the resilient member. The resilient member is thus stretched across the bottom of the door or curtain, and serves as a bottom bar that also substantially conforms to or deflects around an obstruction, thus preventing or minimizing damage to the door, the bottom bar and the obstruction.Type: GrantFiled: April 4, 1997Date of Patent: June 29, 1999Assignee: Rite-Hite Holding CorporationInventor: Peter S.
