    Abstract: The invention relates to an apparatus and a method for preparing a primary original consisting of picture elements in order to produce processed originals for polychromatic reproduction comprising the following steps: (a) partitioning the primary original into regions which are each assigned to a color class, (b) determining target picture elements within the region of each color class by associating the picture elements to which a source picture element located outside said region is closest according to a predetermined distance measure, (c) labeling non-specific traps in the target picture elements with the color classes of the associated source picture elements and the corresponding distance measures, and (d) generating traps according to predetermined trapping rules by selecting picture elements whose distance measure does not exceed a predetermined trap width, and whose color class determined in step (a), together with the color class of a non-specific trap determined in steps (b) and (c), correspond
