  • Patent number: 6589621
Abstract: Compositions comprising a blend of an inorganic base, an organic base, a monofunctional organic nucleophile or a multifunctional organic nucleophile and a thermoplastic hydroxy-functionalized polyetheramine can be formed into films and laminate structures by using conventional extrusion techniques. Containers and other molded parts can be fabricated from the films or laminate structures by using conventional fabricating techniques for thermoplastic polymers such as compression molding, injection molding, extrusion, thermoforming, blow molding and solvent casting.

  • Patent number: 6512024
Abstract: Stable aqueous dispersions or emulsions can be prepared by merging into a mechanical disperser a stream of a molten or liquid disperse phase with a stream of a molten or liquid continuous phase to form a dispersion or emulsion. The molten or liquid disperse phase stream contains a polymer that is preferably a solid at room temperature, but molten at some advanced temperature. The polymer is formed in a molten state or formed and melted by a continuous reaction process such as an extrusion process, including melt extrusion or compound extrusion. It has been discovered that low polydisperse submicron sized dispersion can be prepared by the method of the present invention.

  • Patent number: 6436326
Abstract: A process and apparatus for preparing compositions including one or more resinous materials and/or other ingredients using a continuous reactor combined with a slurry vessel for feeding a slurry feed stream to the reactor. More specifically, the process and apparatus prepares a composition by feeding a slurry of one or more reactive monomers and/or oligomers into a continuous reactor extruder to manufacture one or more resinous materials. Optionally, the resinous material may be continuously conveying to a mixer for continuously mixing the resinous material with other ingredients to form a blended composition.

  • Patent number: 5320753
Abstract: Filtration process and filters for use with materials such as, but not limited to, melts, utilizing a band of filter medium sealed in the filter rollers to seal the material from the outside. In one embodiment, the seal rollers reduce to a minimum the leakage of melt to the outside and make it possible to advance the filter medium through the filter continuously. In various embodiments, the filter medium can be advanced either by the takeup spool or by driving the seal rollers and the rate of movement of the filter medium through the filter can be controlled to maintain a constant pressure drop across the filter. Two component wear-resistant seals are also provided. Maintaining constant conditions through continuous advancement of the filter medium during filtration yields higher product quality and dimensional stability.

  • Patent number: 5062713
Abstract: A method for the on-line determination of the residence time distribution of a polymer extruder by injecting a quantity of dye, such as Mobay Red 5B, into the feed throat of the extruder and then photometrically monitoring the polymer flowing from the extruder for the dye. The advance of the present invention is to direct a single beam of polychromatic light through the polymer flowing from the extruder, e.g., by using a quartz-halogen light source and an optical fiber, and then to split this single beam of light that has passed through the polymer into two beams, e.g., by the use of a bifurcated optical fiber, each of which resulting beams are then passed through a separate filter to a separate photodetector. The wavelength of maximum transmission of one of the filters is selected to be near the wavelength of maximum light absorption of the dye so that the signal from the photodetector associated with this filter is a function of the concentration of the dye in the polymer flowing from the extruder.
