Abstract: A facial ironer is disclosed for heating a subject's skin after an emollient has been previously applied. The ironer is demountable attached to a heating element contained within a housing. The ironer includes a triangular-shaped soleplate having a butted slotted end for slipping over the heating element. Heat is transferred from the heating element to the metallic soleplate. The soleplate has an insulated gripper for holding and manipulating the heated surface of the soleplate over the subject's face for heating the emollient and for providing a facial treatment to the subject.

Abstract: An elongated workpiece is transported forwardly and backwards in a sewing or stitching machine by looping it upstream and downstream of the sewing or stitching station, by maintaining both loops under tension, by increasing the size of the downstream loop simultaneously with a reduction of the size of the upstream loop, and vice versa.

Abstract: A cuvette for the determination of a chemical component of a fluid by photo evaluation has two planar-shaped parts parallel to one another at least one of which is transparent in the spectral range used for the evaluation. A planar distance piece of a filamentary reticulation for receiving the fluid therein spaces the planar-shaped parts apart to set the length of the light path through the cuvette for the photo evaluation.

Abstract: A connecting link for setting stitch width or length is fashioned as a flat metal piece and is retained on the bearing side in a molded-on synthetic resin bearing head. The bearing head is suspended by means of two trunnions on a bearing bracket and on an index lever attached to the bearing bracket. The sliding block is constituted by a sliding sleeve made of a synthetic resin, encompassing the connecting link and articulated by way of two trunnions to the linkage leading to the needle bar frame.

Abstract: The lifting device (19) of the presser foot (21) of a sewing machine is operable through the use of an operating axle (18) and a toggle lever (20). The operating axle (18) is connected to a slide (15) capable of engaging and disengaging a coupling mechanism (10). The coupling mechanism (10) is arranged between the lifting device (6) of the feed dog (3) and the oscillating drive means (7) of the lifting device. During the lifting of the presser foot (21) by means of the toggle lever (20), the coupling pin (12) of the coupling mechanism (10) is simultaneously placed out of engagement with the driven oscillating lever (8) by means of the slide (15). Thus the drive of the lifting device (6) is interrupted, and a spring (13) pulls the feed dog (3) into its lowered position. Thus the manipulation of the sewing material is made possible without the feed dog presenting an obstacle.

Abstract: Waterfloatation systems to prevent decubitus ulcers are known, but they suffer the disadvantages that systems having foam frames require a large volume for storage and transport. Modular systems which are very handy for hospitals normally are too expensive for home patients. This invention provides a floatation system having a foam frame which can be reduced to a very small volume and which can be used as a waterfloatation support for home patients at a considerably lower cost than conventional systems.

Abstract: A composition and process for permitting the separation of plasma or serum from whole blood. The composition includes glass fibers having an average diameter of from 0.2.mu. to 5.mu. and a density of 0.1 g/cm.sup.2 to 0.5 g/cm.sup.2. The process includes the steps of slowly trickling whole blood onto one side of a layer composed of the composition of glass fibers, whereby plasma or serum separated from the blood becomes available at another side of the layer. The total volume of the plasma or serum separated from the blood is limited to at most 50% of the absorption volume of the glass fiber layer.

Abstract: The detection and determination of (a) hydrogen peroxide or of a substance which reacts with the formation of hydrogen peroxide or (b) of peroxidase or a peroxidatively active substance, is carried out by contacting an unknown sample with a chromogen and, in case (a), with a peroxidatively active substance or in case (b) with hydrogen peroxide or a substance which reacts with the formation of hydrogen peroxide, and evaluating the coloration produced by the reaction, wherein, as the chromogen, there is used at least one 3,3',5,5'-tetraalkylbenzidine compound of the formula: ##STR1## wherein R.sub.1, R.sub.2, R.sub.3 and R.sub.4, which can be the same or different, are straight-chained or branched alkyl radicals containing up to 6 and preferably up to 4 carbon atoms.

Abstract: Novel 3-aminocarbazole compounds of the formula: ##SPC1##WhereinX is hydrogen or halogen,Y is oxygen or represents two hydrogen atoms; andR.sub.1 and R.sub.2, which can be the same or different, are hydrogen, lower alkyl or hydroxyalkyl or amino; andN is 1 or 2, with the proviso that when n is2, X, Y, R.sub.1 and R.sub.2 cannot all be hydrogen atoms, as well as the salts thereof with inorganic and organic acids; are outstandingly effective indicators for the determination of glucose and provide stable compositions for such glucose determination.
