  • Patent number: 9918679
Abstract: Systems and methods for generating a sonification output for presenting information about physiological parameters such as oxygen saturation and heart rate parameters in discrete auditory events. In a preferred embodiment, each event comprises two sounds. The first is a reference sound that indicates the desired target state for the two parameters and the second indicates the actual state. Heart rate is preferably represented by amplitude modulation. Oxygen saturation is preferably represented by a timbral manipulation.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: November 20, 2014
Date of Patent: March 20, 2018
Assignees: THE REGENTS OF THE UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA, NEW TECHNOLOGY SOUNDINGS, LLC, TRUSTEES OF DARTMOUTH COLLEGE
Inventors: Petr Janata, Beau Sievers, William H. Edwards

  • Patent number: 5667470
Abstract: A method for using patient feedback to influence presentation of sound stimuli during music therapy comprises presenting a first stimulus to induce a predicted degree of expectancy fulfillment, detecting brain electrical activity generated by the patient in response thereto, determining values of certain parameters of the brain electrical activity, comparing the parameters to a classification library to determine the actual degree of expectancy fulfillment or violation, calculating a correction factor based on the difference between the predicted and actual degrees of expectancy fulfillment or violation, determining the configuration of a second stimulus taking into account the correction factor, and arranging and presenting the second stimulus to the patient. Apparatus for carrying out the method comprises an arrangement of readily available hardware and software components.
