  • Patent number: 7424299
Abstract: In a communication system in which mobile terminals may roam throughout an area with a plurality of base stations with overlapping coverages and wherein the base stations employ multiplexed slots all in the same frequency range, a system and method for allocating slots based on the quality classes of the transmitted traffic wherein certain slots are assigned as owned by some base stations and certain other slots are assigned as shared between base stations. Slots assigned as owned by a base station are assigned as avoided by adjacent base stations. When assigning a slot for communication from a mobile terminal, the number of slot quality measurements that must be made in order to find a slot with interference below an acceptable level is reduced, compared to conventional dynamic slot allocation schemes.

  • Publication number: 20030224813
Abstract: A method of adjusting downlink transmission power at a base station based on the measured SIR relative to a referenced level in a mobile terminal. The referenced level can be the targeted SIR or zero. When the measured SIR is greater than the referenced level, the measured SIR is further compared to a first threshold value in order to determine the step size for power reduction. When the measured SIR is smaller than the referenced level, the measured SIR is further compared to a second threshold value in order to determine the step size for power increase. The first and second threshold values can be derived from the target SIR and TPC step size as provided in the RRC signal. Furthermore, the step values and threshold can be based on statistical analysis while the system is running.

  • Patent number: 6298219
Abstract: The invention relates to a method for the determination of neighbours of a sub-cell (122C) in a cellular radio network base station (100) applying dynamic channel allocation, and to a base station (100) implementing the method. The base station (100) comprises at least two sub-cells (122A, 122B, 122C). Each sub-cell (122A, 122B, 122C) comprises an antenna unit (118A, 118B, 118C) with a fixed connection to the base station (100). A transceiver (TRX1-TRX2-TRXN) is used for transmitting a signal through an antenna unit (118A, 118B, 118C). A measurement unit (124) measures through the antenna unit (118A, 118B, 118C) the reception power of the received signal. The invention is characterized in that a transceiver (TRX1) is used for transmitting a test signal (200) through the antenna unit of the sub-cell (122C) under examination. The test signal (200) is received though the antenna units (118A, 118B) of the of the sub-cells (122A, 122B).

  • Patent number: 6292661
Abstract: The invention relates to a method of implementing a handover in a cellular radio system. The cellular radio system has at least on cell (Cd) which comprises at least two subcells and in which all available frequencies are dynamically used. The cellular radio system comprises in each cell (C, Cd) at least one base station (BTS) which communicates with subscriber terminals (MS) located within its area. A handover from an old cell to a new cell (Cd) applying dynamic channel allocation is characterized in that only BCCH carrier frequency time slots comprising control channels are transmitted all the time in all subcells of the cell(Cd). The method allows traffic channels of a BCCH carrier frequency to be dynamically reused in subcells of the cell (Cd), providing the improved system capacity.

  • Patent number: 6289219
Abstract: Provided is a method and system for performing a handover of a terminal subscriber between sub-cells in a cellular radio network base station. In the method and system, signals from antenna units corresponding to each of the sub-cells are added together to form a combined signal. A signal power of the combined signal and the signal power a signal from a serving sub-cell are measured in a transceiver of the base station. The measurement results are compared. If the signal power of the combined signal is greater than the signal power of the signal from the serving sub-cell, a handover of the terminal subscriber is performed.
