Publication number: 20140225604Abstract: A magnetic sensor that utilizes Rashba effect to generate spin polarization. The sensor eliminates the need for a pinned layer structure and therefore, greatly reduces the gap thickness of the sensor allowing for greatly improved data density. The sensor includes a two dimensional conductor adjacent to a magnetic free layer, that can also be separated from the free layer by a non-magnetic, electrically insulating barrier layer and that can also be constructed with or without side shields. A current flow through the two-dimensional conductor in a direction parallel with the air bearing surface causes a spin polarization oriented perpendicular to the air bearing surface. The voltage output of the sensor changes with changing magnetization direction of the free layer relative to spin polarization in the two dimensional conductor.Type: ApplicationFiled: February 11, 2013Publication date: August 14, 2014Applicant: HGST Netherlands B.V.Inventors: Goran Mihajlovic, Petrus A. Van Der Heijden

Publication number: 20140175048Abstract: A method of manufacturing a magnetic sensor having a hard bias structure located at a back edge of the sensor. The method forms an electrical lapping guide that is compatible for use with such a sensor having a back edge hard bias structure and which can accurately determine a termination point for a lapping operation that forms an air bearing surface of the slider and determines the sensor stripe height.Type: ApplicationFiled: December 21, 2012Publication date: June 26, 2014Applicant: HGST NETHERLANDS B.V.Inventors: David P. Patent number: 8749918Abstract: The present invention generally relates to a magnetic recording system that utilizes perpendicular exchange spring media and ring heads. The write field of ring heads does not experience a strong loss as compared to pole heads because the pole can be kept long in the direction perpendicular to the recording medium and thus does not result in unfavorable write field scaling.Type: GrantFiled: December 22, 2010Date of Patent: June 10, 2014Assignee: HGST Netherlands B.V.Inventors: Hans J. Richter, Petrus A. Van Der Heijden

Patent number: 8749926Abstract: A magnetic scissor type magnetic read head having magnetic side shielding for reduced effective track width and having side biasing for improved stability. The read head includes first and magnetic side shields that each include first and second magnetic layers and an anti-parallel exchange coupling layer sandwiched there-between. The magnetic layers of the side shields are anti-parallel coupled with one another such that one of the magnetic layers has its magnetization oriented in a first direction parallel with the air bearing surface and the second magnetic layer has its magnetization oriented in a second direction that is opposite to the first direction and also parallel with the air bearing surface. These magnetizations of the first and second magnetic layers provide a bias field that stabilizes the magnetization of the free magnetic layers of the sensor stack to prevent flipping of the magnetizations of these layers.Type: GrantFiled: November 30, 2012Date of Patent: June 10, 2014Assignee: HGST Netherlands B.V.Inventors: Quang Le, Simon H. Liao, Guangli Liu, Stefan Maat, Xiaozhong Dang, David J. Seagle, Petrus A. Van Der Heijden

Patent number: 8587900Abstract: An apparatus for cooling a nanowire in a wire assisted magnetic recording head using a radiator in close proximity to a shield of the write pole. The radiator may further contain current restraints (e.g., slits, cuts, or resistive materials) that maximize current density in the nanowire at a location that corresponds to the current restraints. These current restraints may be further arranged to align with a write pole such that the current is forced to flow primarily through the nanowire when the nanowire is closest to the write pole. The nanowire may then be used either as main or auxiliary writing element for recording signals to a high coercivity media. Moreover, the nanowire and radiator may be combined into a single nanofoil which has a least two portions that perform a similar function as both the nanowire and radiator.Type: GrantFiled: May 24, 2011Date of Patent: November 19, 2013Assignee: HGST Netherlands B.V.Inventors: Luiz M. Franca-Neto, Bruce A. Gurney, Lidu Huang, Vijay P. S. Rawat, Petrus A. Van Der Heijden

Publication number: 20070115583Abstract: A magnetic write head for perpendicular magnetic recording, the write head having a magnetic write pole configured with a cross section as viewed from the ABS that has a trailing portion with substantially vertical side walls and a leading portion formed with a taper that becomes narrower as it extends toward the leading edge. The write pole provides for excellent write field strength by providing sufficient cross section near the trailing edge to avoid magnetic saturation of the pole tip. The parallel side walls of the trailing portion also provide for excellent track width control during manufacture of the write head. The tapered portion of the write head, which starts some distance away from the trailing edge, prevents skew related adjacent track writing when the actuator that holds the write head is at its innermost or outermost travel extensions.Type: ApplicationFiled: November 23, 2005Publication date: May 24, 2007Inventors: Christian Bonhote, Quang Le, Byron Lengsfield, Jui-Lung Li, Scott MacDonald, Petrus Van Der Heijden

Patent number: 6519119Abstract: A recording head for use with magnetic recording media includes a current perpendicular to plane (CPP) type giant magnetoresistive (GMR) read element, with the alternating magnetic and nonmagnetic layers within the GMR read element either perpendicular or angled to the read head's shields. This structure maximizes the number of alternating layers within the GMR read element, and minimizes the area available for flow of the test current. Both total resistance of the GMR element, and the change in resistance as a function of changes in magnetic flux, relative to total resistance, are thereby increased. The sensitivity of the GMR read element is thereby increased, permitting storage of information within magnetic recording media at greater densities. The invention also includes a method of manufacturing a read head using such a GMR element.Type: GrantFiled: November 3, 2000Date of Patent: February 11, 2003Assignee: Seagate Technology, LLCInventors: Petrus A. van der Heijden, Billy Wayne Crue
