Abstract: A system and method are described for managing a plurality of sever nodes. In one embodiment, the sever nodes are organized into groups referred to as “instances.” Each instance includes a group of redundant sever nodes and a dispatcher for distributing service requests to each of the sever nodes. In addition, a central message passing architecture is defined which allows the various instances to communicate with one another. In one embodiment, a hierarchical configuration data object is stored within a database and is centrally accessible by all of the servers from all of the instances. The hierarchical configuration data object organizes configuration data and binary data in a logical hierarchy which simplifies sever node management in an enterprise network.

One or more local properties of the server node may also be generated. In an embodiment, a cluster definition that is persistently stored on a database is updated with the one or more local properties.

The update system may provide an interface for deploying software components into the database. The update system may map the software components into a relational database or similar database system. In an embodiment, a front-end layer of the configuration tool displays a visual representation of one or more properties stored in a secure store file. The configuration tool may receive input identifying one of the displayed properties. In an embodiment, the configuration tool uses a logical task to set a value for the selected property in a data layer of the configuration tool.
