Publication number: 20250128270Abstract: A filter for filter air for an internal combustion engine and methods of operation are described herein. The air precleaner is configured to use electrostatic attraction or repulsion to move ionized particles towards an inner wall of the air precleaner, where the particles eventually exit the air precleaner through a particle exhaust. The particles are ionized using a positive charge plate and a negative charge plate. The positive charge plate creates a positive charge field, creating positive ions that ionize particles in the air with a positive charge. The negative charge plate creates a negative charge field, creating negative ions that ionize particles in the air with a negative charge. The air precleaner can also include a cyclonic section that causes the air to rotate about a central axis of the air precleaner, imparting a centripetal force on the particles. The centripetal force and the electrostatic force act together to filter the air.Type: ApplicationFiled: October 23, 2023Publication date: April 24, 2025Applicant: Caterpillar Inc.Inventors: Philip Carl Spengler, Franklin Jeffrey Kostecki, Alex Raymond Kuscsik, Patrick James White McNulty, Stephen Christopher Sheltra

Publication number: 20240207763Abstract: An endcap for a filter element includes an annular plate member disposed adjacent an axial end surface of an annular filter medium of the filter element. A radially outer annular flange projects axially from a surface of the annular plate member. The radially outer annular flange includes a winglet feature extending radially outwardly in a cantilever fashion from an outer circumferential surface of the radially outer annular flange in a direction opposite to a direction in which the filter element is rotated during installation into a filter base of a filter system, with the winglet feature deflecting toward the outer circumferential surface of the radially outer annular flange through contact with a wedge-shaped protrusion projecting radially inwardly from an inner circumference of the filter base as the filter element is rotatably installed into the filter base, and springing back to its undeflected configuration after passing the wedge-shaped protrusion.Type: ApplicationFiled: April 10, 2023Publication date: June 27, 2024Applicant: CATERPILLAR INC.Inventors: Jon Tyler Immel, Stephen Ellis Oedewaldt, Philip Carl Spengler, Brian John Sutton, Tony Lynn Alwardt
