    Abstract: In one aspect, a wake-up circuit is provided for triggering a determination of an absolute rotational position of a rotatable shaft of a motor in an electric power steering system of a vehicle. The wake-up circuit includes a plurality of inputs coupled to separate phases of the motor. A voltage boosting circuit is operable to increase a back electromotive force (EMF) voltage induced on one or more of the inputs by rotation of the rotatable shaft of the motor and produce at least one voltage-boosted back EMF voltage. A comparator circuit is operable to compare the at least one voltage-boosted back EMF voltage to a reference voltage and trigger a monitoring system to perform the determination of the absolute rotational position of the rotatable shaft of the motor in the electric power steering system based on a result of the compare during an ignition off state of the vehicle.

    Abstract: A method of determining velocity of a shaft is provided. The method includes receiving a first shaft position signal and a second shaft position signal. Derivatives of each of the first shaft position signal and the second shaft position signal are computed, as are squares of each of the derivatives, a summation of the squares, and a square root of the summation. The velocity is output as a result of the square root.

The apparatus includes a magnet assembly affixed to a rotating shaft of a rotating device and a circuit assembly. The circuit assembly includes a circuit interconnection having a sense coil and sensors affixed thereto. The circuit assembly is adapted to be in proximity to the magnet assembly, wherein the magnet assembly combines with the circuit assembly to form an air core electric machine such that voltages generated from the sense coil exhibits an amplitude proportional to the velocity.
