Publication number: 20120227007Abstract: Systems, methods and products are described that provide taskbar grouping by user task. One aspect includes identifying a plurality of applications open on a computing device; identifying one or more objects open in said plurality of applications; determining one or more objective measures of said one or more objects belonging to a particular task; and automatically grouping objects sharing one or more objective measures of belonging to a particular task together in a common taskbar icon of a display.Type: ApplicationFiled: March 3, 2011Publication date: September 6, 2012Applicant: Lenovo (Singapore) Pte.Inventors: John W. Nicholson, Philip J. Jakes

Patent number: 8244312Abstract: The provision of a mode in silver zinc batteries where a user can access extra capacity as an emergency reserve for times when extra capacity is needed. While this temporarily increases capacity, it does not detrimentally affect cycle life over the longer term, and it permits a silver zinc battery to essentially mimic the long term capacity and cycle life characteristics of a lithium ion battery while still affording inherent advantages associated with silver zinc batteries. In a variant embodiment, this ability to temporarily increase capacity is optimally employed at the end of a battery life cycle in a controlled “roll-off” that accords additional cycles of battery service life. In another variant embodiment, the general capability to control capacity is employed to gradually decrease the available capacity of a battery over the life of the battery, to thereby extend the battery service life.Type: GrantFiled: September 30, 2008Date of Patent: August 14, 2012Assignee: Lenovo (Singapore) Pte. Ltd.Inventors: Philip J. Jakes, Tin-Lup Wong, Timothy Humphrey, Jeremy R. Carlson, Daryl Cromer

Patent number: 8174239Abstract: For laptops or other mobile devices, a battery charging arrangement wherein fast-charging and/or slow-charging is governed by something other than a fixed, immovable battery level threshold. Particularly, a variable threshold is broadly contemplated herein which may be governed by any of a very wide variety of conceivable factors, including (but by no means limited to) information relating to a user's schedule or calendar, especially as regards “free” time when a user is not using a computer. Accordingly, if there is a long uninterrupted period of computer “downtime” (i.e., when a user is not using the computer), the battery level threshold below which fast-charging takes place can be lower. By the same token, for short periods of computer downtime, this threshold can be higher. In this manner, fast-charging is reserved only for the most compelling, time-based circumstances.Type: GrantFiled: March 31, 2008Date of Patent: May 8, 2012Assignee: Lenovo (Singapore) Pte. Ltd.Inventors: Philip J. Jakes, Jennifer G. Zawacki

Publication number: 20110292540Abstract: A modified hard disk drive (HDD) state is provided. The modified HDD state corresponds to a state wherein the heads of a hard disk drive assembly are parked as a baseline setting, but permitted to float over the platters for completing requests on a limited basis. This prioritizes HHD protection in certain contexts.Type: ApplicationFiled: May 28, 2010Publication date: December 1, 2011Inventors: John W. Nicholson, Jeffrey R. Hobbet, Philip J. Jakes

Patent number: 7813733Abstract: In a wireless network in which a client has access to multiple Access Points the client usually attaches to one of the Access Points (AP) and stays attached even though signal transmission is impaired, whereas transmission would not be impaired if the client attaches to another one of the multiple APs. Apparatus and method are described to detect interference noise level and force the client to roam and attach to another AP if interference noise level impairs signal transmission.Type: GrantFiled: July 27, 2004Date of Patent: October 12, 2010Assignee: Lenovo (Singapore) Pte. Publication number: 20070294421Abstract: This present invention relates to a method for using hypervisors to enable stable wireless network connections. The crux of the invention involves pushing the control of the networking devices from the Operating System level down to a networking front end hypervisor level. The hypervisor will control all networking devices, the authentication for these devices, and the selection of which connection to use. The hypervisor will also perform Network Address Translation (NAT) to the Operating System. Thus, the Operating System will receive a single, private IP address for use with the Operating System's applications. The hypervisor will handle the change of the IP address when roaming between networks and hide it from the Operating System through the use of the NAT.Type: ApplicationFiled: June 20, 2006Publication date: December 20, 2007Applicant: Lenovo (Singapore) Pte.
