  • Publication number: 20150287290
Abstract: A point of sale system capable of operating in an indicia-reading mode or a verification mode is disclosed. In the indicia-reading mode, the point of sale system configures its illumination, imaging, and processing to read indicia as part of a normal checkout process. If triggered by a user or by an event, the point of sale system may operate in a verification mode. In the verification mode, the point of sale system enables the necessary illumination, imaging, and processing to verify an item. This verification includes illuminating the item in a way that causes a noticeable response from a security mark (or marks) on the item. An image of the response may be captured and processed to authenticate/verify the item. The point of sale system may then respond to the verification and/or may store the image/results as a record of the verification.

  • Publication number: 20150254485
Abstract: An indicia-reading module is capable of integration into the smallest face of thin-profile smart device. The module employs chip-on-board packaging and a customized sensor enclosure to eliminate the stack-up height found in conventional packaging. The module also employs a customized frame to reduce volume by integrating circuit subassembly circuit boards into a unique architecture and by serving as the lenses for the illuminator and the aimer, thereby eliminating the need for any extra lenses or holders.

  • Publication number: 20150193644
Abstract: A decodable indicia reading terminal can comprise a laser-based scanner, an imager-based scanner, a central processing unit (CPU), and an illumination assembly. The illumination assembly can include an indicator light bar and an illumination light bar. The ON/OFF state and color of the indicator light bar can reflect the state of the decodable indicia reading terminal. The illumination light bar can be configured to generate a high intensity illumination for illuminating the substrate bearing the decodable indicia. The wavelength of the light generated by the indicator light bar can be substantially equal to the wavelength of the light generated by the illumination light bar, and the light generated by the illumination light bar can have a very low perceived intensity.

  • Patent number: 8976030
Abstract: A checkout system is provided for carrying out a two-factor authentication process where coded products are purchased and theft activity might be pursued. The system typically includes an identification code reader for reading product identification codes (e.g. UPC bar code symbols or EPC-encoded RFID tags) on products that are passed through the point of sale (POS) and a security code detector/reader for automatically detecting/reading a security code (e.g. implemented as an EAS tag or an RFID tag) at the POS. During product checkout operations, the identification code reader reads identification codes, and the security code detector/reader detects or reads security codes applied to products. Collected identification and security data is automatically processed using identification and security data stored in a database to determine whether or not each product being purchased at the POS is in compliance or not in compliance with a two-factor authentication process supported by the checkout system.

  • Publication number: 20140104416
Abstract: A method for determining the dimensions of an object comprises projecting a laser pattern (e.g., a visible laser pattern) onto an object, capturing an image of the projected pattern on the object, and determining the dimensions of the object based, at least in part, on the captured image. An exemplary method includes projecting a laser pattern (e.g., a grid or a set of lines) onto a rectangular box. Typically, the box is positioned such that two non-parallel faces are visible to the system or device projecting the laser pattern and a camera system with known field of view characteristics. The camera system is used to capture an image of the laser light reflecting off of the box.
