Abstract: A method is provided for controlling service actions at a set top box. When the method is executed, a first graphical user interface is displayed. The first graphical user interface includes a first set of soft keys. An arrangement of the first set of soft keys corresponds to an arrangement of a first set of service buttons on the remote control device. Further, the arrangement of the first set of soft keys corresponds to an arrangement of a second set of service buttons on a set top box that is responsive to one or more signals from the remote control device. Each of the first set of soft keys is linked to a corresponding service button on the remote control device. Also, each of the first set of soft keys is shaped in a corresponding manner to the corresponding service button on the remote control device.

  • Publication number: 20060037043
Abstract: A method of managing video content is provided. The method includes displaying a graphical user interface. The graphical user interface comprising a ready list, a queue list, and an action list. When a first video file is downloaded to a memory within a set top box, a first title corresponding to the first video file is added to the ready list. Further, when the first title is selected from the ready list, the first video file is displayed. Additionally, a second video file can be scheduled for download to the memory within the set top box and if so, a second title corresponding to the second video file is added to the queue list. When the second title is selected from the queue list, the second video file is downloaded to the memory within the set top box.

  • Publication number: 20060037083
Abstract: A method of providing access to downloadable protected video content includes providing parental controls. The parental controls include a parental control password. Purchase controls are also provided and include a purchase control password. The purchase control password is different from the parental control password. Further, protected video content is downloaded and stored to a memory within a set top box when both the parental controls and the purchase controls are satisfied. A number of attempts to correctly input the parental control password or the purchase control password are monitored. When the number of attempts for either password exceeds a predetermined threshold, a user is prevented from further attempts to input the respective password. Moreover, the attempt to download protected video content is canceled, and further downloads of protected video content are prevented for a predetermined time period.

  • Publication number: 20060026663
Abstract: A method of pre-caching video content is provided and includes measuring an available bandwidth of a data connection to a set top box. The available bandwidth measurement can be an average available bandwidth of the data connection to the set top box or a minimum available bandwidth of the data connection to the set top box. Each of a plurality of video files is divided into a first portion and a second portion and the size of each first portion is based on the available bandwidth measurement. The first portion of each of the plurality of video files is downloaded over the data connection and stored in a memory within the set top box. A list is displayed at a display device and includes a list of video titles that correspond to the plurality of video files that have only a first portion downloaded to the memory.

  • Publication number: 20060015924
Abstract: Methods, systems and content have been developed for increasing the bandwidth available to a bandwidth-constrained medium for transmitting digital video content. The content that is to be transmitted is compressed in proportion to the desirability of the content. The desirability of the content is determined by obtaining human-factors data indicative of whether a selected item of content is highly desirable. A desirability score derived from the data is assigned to the content. The desirability score determines the compression level. Feedback systems change the level of compression as the desirability of the content changes with time.

  • Publication number: 20050180560
Abstract: A system and method are disclosed for operating a telephone to bypass wireline telephone service. A system that incorporates teachings of the present disclosure may include, for example, a housing component at least partially defining a first and a second enclosure. The housing component may be part of a Local Exchange Carrier Network Interface Device. In such an embodiment, the first enclosure may represent a service provider access portion, and the second enclosure may represent a customer access portion. The system may also include a door coupled to the housing component. The door may be capable of being releasably secured in a closed position such that the door defines a portion of the first enclosure. A cradle system formed to receive a wireless transceiving device may be secured within the first enclosure in a manner allowing the door to be releasably secured in the closed position.

  • Publication number: 20050166261
Abstract: A system and method are disclosed for providing authentication services. A method incorporating teachings of the present disclosure may include receiving a common user credential from a user seeking access to an information network. In some embodiments, the common user credential may have been broadly assigned and may not effectively operate as a unique identifier for the user. A unique credential may be generated for the user at a network node and may include some piece of network specific information associated with or capable of uniquely identifying a connection being used by the user. The unique credential may then be considered in combination with the common user credential or in lieu of the common user credential when making an authentication decision for the user.

  • Patent number: 6252989
Abstract: A foveated imaging system, which can be implemented on a general purpose computer and greatly reduces the transmission bandwidth of images has been developed. This system has demonstrated that significant reductions in bandwidth can be achieved while still maintaining access to high detail at any point in an image. The system is implemented with conventional computer, display, and camera hardware. It utilizes novel algorithms for image coding and decoding that are superior both in degree of compression and in perceived image quality and is more flexible and adaptable to different bandwidth requirements and communications applications than previous systems. The system utilizes novel methods of incorporating human perceptual properties into the coding the decoding algorithms providing superior foveation. One version of the system includes a simple, inexpensive, parallel pipeline architecture, which enhances the capability for conventional and foveated data compression.
