  • Patent number: 4686376
Abstract: An improved turbine and generating system for generating electrical power from the energy of flowing water, such as a tide, in a water course are disclosed. The turbine features peripheral inward flow and axial outward flow. A flow divider means is provided to ensure that the outward flow is substantially uniform along the turbine shaft in both directions. The turbine wheel is made up of radially extending scoops and generally circular disks, to define chambers. Preferably the chambers are of continuously decreasing cross-sectional area, measured perpendicular to water flow therethrough. Baffles may be provided preventing water from entering certain of the chambers formed between the scoops and disks of the turbine to ensure that a net rotational impetus is given to the turbine by water flow thereagainst. The structure supporting the turbines and generators in and above the watercourse may include a causeway for vehicular traffic.

  • Patent number: 4660948
Abstract: An eye chart for use in a treatment program that includes eye exercises comprises a peripheral line defining a geometric shape and a pair of intersecting lines within the area defined by the peripheral line. Spool-shaped images are superimposed on the peripheral line in a predetermined pattern and one of the intersected lines includes an intermediate wavy portion. Numerals of desired sizes are located at various positions on the chart. The invention also encompasses several eye exercise methods utilizing the chart.

  • Patent number: 4501327
Abstract: A method for sealing the wall of a bore hole comprises forming a liner of resilient sheet material into a substantially cylindrical or scroll configuration having a diameter smaller than that of the hole, inserting the liner into the hole, allowing the liner to expand to substantially the diameter of the hole, and pressing the liner against the wall of the bore hole. Apparatus for performing the method comprises an elongated member having a first end insertable into the bore hole, means associated therewith for supporting a liner within the hole, and rotary means for pressing the liner into contact with the wall of the hole. A liner in accordance with the present invention comprises a resilient sheet pressed against the wall of the bore hole, and a layer of mud and cement interposed between the sheet and the wall.

  • Patent number: 4382746
Abstract: An energy conversion apparatus includes a turbine-like structure for converting water pressure to rotary motion. A vortex is set up within the structure and is used to enhance the power output of the device. The apparatus includes a drum for receiving water from a plurality of nozzles, and a plurality of lugs disposed on an interior surface of an upper portion of the drum. The lugs presenting a reaction surface to the water supplied by the nozzles from a pressure line for rotating the drum. The drum is elongated to provide an opportunity for a vortex to develop. The vortex is enhanced by the shape of the drum which presents a cross-section having a tapered portion which narrows progressively downwardly. The resultant vortex applies further rotational force to the interior surface of the drum, and more specifically to vanes provided within the drum for reacting with the vortex. Some of the lugs are connected to a central shaft by radial arms at a top opening of the drum.

  • Patent number: 4365929
Abstract: The tower comprises a base supported on a framework which mounts a wind powered turbine having a vertical axis of rotation. Air is channeled to the turbine rotor to cause counterclockwise rotation thereof by upper and lower wind deflectors. The wind deflectors include channels which cause the oncoming air to swirl in a counterclockwise motion into the rotor transmitting energy thereto. The vertical struts of the framework are also configured so as to deflect the oncoming air into the rotor in a counterclockwise direction. The rotor itself comprises columns of vertically spaced, radially extending scoops and radially extending curved blades to ensure highly efficient energy conversion. The rotor is formed with no center shaft to allow free flow of air therethrough.
