Abstract: One embodiment of the present method and apparatus adaptive in-operator load shedding includes receiving at least two data streams (each comprising a plurality of tuples, or data items) into respective sliding windows of memory. A throttling fraction is then calculated based on input rates associated with the data streams and on currently available processing resources. Tuples are then selected for processing from the data streams in accordance with the throttling fraction, where the selected tuples represent a subset of all tuples contained within the sliding window.

Abstract: This invention introduces a new concept called virtual construct intervals (VCI), where each predicate interval is decomposed into one or more of these construct intervals. These VCIs strictly cover the predicate interval. Namely, every attribute value covered by the predicate interval is also covered by at least one of the decomposed VCIs, and vice versa. Each construct interval has a unique ID or interval coordinate and a set of endpoints. A construct interval is considered activated when a predicate interval using it in its decomposition is added to the system. The predicate ID is then inserted into the ID lists associated with the decomposed VCIs. To facilitate fast search, a bitmap vector is used to indicate the activation of VCIs that cover an event value. The challenge is to find an appropriate set of construct intervals to make predicate decomposition simple and, more importantly, to build efficient bitmap indexes.

Abstract: A method, system, and computer readable medium for identifying local patterns in at least one time series data stream are disclosed. The method comprises generating multiple ordered levels of hierarchal approximation functions. The multiple ordered levels are generated directly from at least one given time series data stream including at least one set of time series data. The hierarchical approximation functions for each level of the multiple levels is based upon creating a set of approximating functions. The hierarchical approximation functions are also based upon selecting a current window with a current window length from a set of varying window lengths. The current window is selected for a current level of the multiple levels.

The method allows users to define environmental parameters for controlling user interaction, define user representation parameters of user data within the environment, capture user data from the users, build an abstract graphical display of the environment, and build a user representation within the abstract graphical display for each user's data.

Abstract: The present invention provides a method, system and apparatus enabling user-defined, genre-structured interaction online. The present invention enables users to define their own genres, including rules of interaction, as well as rules of enforcement. Genre definitions also can include the specification of roles, parameters, and states. The present invention also facilitates a given user to modify a given genre definition. Allowable modifications include addition, modification, and deletion of parameters and interaction and enforcement rules. The present invention also provides dynamically updated graphical representations of the state of genre instances, these graphical representations definable by the users.

Abstract: A method and system are described for creating and maintaining a firewall subscription service. A firewall is established within the firewall service. Customers are permitted to subscribe to the firewall subscription service. Each subscriber is an independent, paying party. A subscriber may subscribe to protect one or more computer systems. The firewall offers a particular level of security to a subscriber's computer systems when the subscriber's computer systems are communicating with an external network. All communications transmitted to any of the subscriber's computer systems utilizing the external network are received first by the firewall. The firewall is utilized to protect the subscriber's computer systems when the subscriber's computer systems receive communications transmitted utilizing the external network.

Abstract: A data communications network includes network servers, clusters of network servers, as well as content providers and service providers, such as ISPs and ASPs, and further includes at least one data processor that operates under control of a stored program resident on a memory media. The stored program directs operation of the data processor to provide users with differentiated services by defining, for individual ones of the plurality of content providers, a plurality of levels of services for users, and for responding to service level tables received from individual ones of the plurality of content providers, where individual ones of users are assigned to one of the plurality of levels of service. There is also at least one resource requirement table for defining at least a minimum set of resources required for realizing individual ones of said plurality of service levels.

Abstract: A system and method for supporting offline Web browsing. A user interests profile comprising content and attribute preferences of Web pages the user may be interested in is provided. Based on that user's profile, there is generated an interestingness values for each of candidate Web pages. From a hoard request initiated by a user, received one or more Web pages are selected and downloaded based on their respective interestingness values. These Web pages are stored for later viewing by the user when offline. The candidate Web pages include base Web pages which are supplied by the user in the hoard request, and linked Web pages which are reachable from the base pages. Thus, an interestingness value may be computed as the interestingness of a hyperlink associated with a Web page reachable from a base Web page, the interestingness value of a hyperlink being based upon the similarity of a linked Web page to the base Web page and/or to that user's interests profile.

Abstract: A system and method for prioritizing information items embedded in documents, for example, web-based documents such as HTML, XML, and the like. One or more feature vectors for the embedding document are first constructed. The feature vectors include: a content feature vector and an attribute feature vector, or both, with the content feature vector characterizing content of the document, the attribute feature vector characterizing attributes of the document. One or more feature vectors are also constructed for an embedded item in the document, the feature vectors also including: a content feature vector and an attribute feature vector, or both. Then, a similarity measure is computed between the item embedded in the document and the embedding document, the similarity measure based on a comparison of either the respective content feature vector and an attribute feature vector, or both, for each embedded item and embedding document.

Abstract: In accordance with the present invention, a method for selecting a channel and delivery time for digital objects for a broadcast delivery service including multiple channels of varying bandwidths includes the steps of selecting digital objects to be sent over the multiple channels, generating a schedule and pricing for the digital objects based on the digital object selected and existing delivery commitments and manipulating the schedule and pricing to provide a profitable delivery of the digital objects. A system is also included.

Abstract: An apparatus, system, method and computer program product for determining optimum routing of vehicles based on historical information as well as user preferences and current travel conditions. Historical data is compiled and statistically analyzed to determiner characteristics of each possible route between two points. The characteristic information is then used along with user preference information and current travel condition information to determine an optimum route between the two points.

Abstract: The present invention provides a method for controlling an entity's access to a resource based on observed behavior of the entity. The method assigns the entity a default authorization meta-tag. The method monitors the entity's behavior and updates the entity's meta-tag based upon the observed behavior. Accordingly, dynamic behavior-based access control is achieved.

Abstract: An apparatus, system, method and computer program product for monitoring and controlling bio-enhancement implants is provided. With the apparatus, system, method and computer program product, a user may control the operation of implantable devices within the user's body by operation of a personal digital device. The personal digital device may obtain operational settings of the various implantable devices based on information stored within the personal digital device and/or information obtained from a network. The settings of the various implants are established in view of the possible interactions of the implants with one another. The personal digital device further monitors the operation of the implantable devices and the user's biological indicia. Based on the monitoring, the operation of the implantable devices are modified to obtain a desired result.

The apparatus, method and computer program product make use of a mechanism for identifying the limitations of the individual. The mechanism may itself inform an information source of the limitations of the individual or the mechanism may be used in conjunction with a user profile to identify the limitations of the individual and the preferred information content format to use with the individual. Based on this determination, a format for the information content from the information source may be selected and used to output the information content to the individual. The selection of the format may include enhancing one or more aspects of a standard format and decreasing one or more other aspects of the standard format.

Abstract: A method for providing product recommendations to customers in an e-commerce environment includes the step of generating content and compatibility representations of products corresponding to a plurality of customers. A similarity function is calculated between pairs of content attributes corresponding to the products. A similarity function is calculated between pairs of compatibility attributes corresponding to the products. The plurality of customers are clustered into a plurality of peer groups. For a given customer, a closest peer group of the plurality of peer groups is determined. At least one potential recommendation is then generated for the given customer based on the closest peer group.
