In some embodiments, a straddle packer assembly may be held in place by the hydraulic anchor. In some embodiments, a swellable packer may be held in place during the swelling process by the hydraulic anchor.

    Abstract: Provided are methods and apparatuses for processing photovoltaic cell metallic substrates to remove various surface defects. In certain embodiments, a thin stainless steel foil is polished using a proposed method leading to a substantial, e.g., twice or more, increase in its surface gloss. In certain embodiments, a method in accordance with the present invention involves contacting a substrate surface with a fixed-abrasive filament roller brush. The brush may be a close-wound coil brush. The brush includes filaments carrying 5-20 micrometer abrasive particles that are permanently fixed in the brush filaments, for example a polymer base material, such as nylon. The particles may be made of silicon carbide and/or other abrasive materials. In certain embodiments, a substrate surface is polished using a series of roller brushes, at least two of which rotate in different directions with respect to that surface.

    Abstract: A lightweight radio/CD player for vehicular application is virtually “fastenerless” and includes a case and frontal interface formed of polymer based material that is molded to provide details to accept audio devices such as playback mechanisms (if desired) and radio receivers, as well as the circuit boards required for electrical control and display. The case and frontal interface are of composite structure, including an insert molded electrically conductive wire mesh screen that has been pre-formed to contour with the molding operation. The wire mesh provides EMC, RFI, BCI and ESD shielding and grounding of the circuit boards via exposed wire mesh pads and adjacent ground clips. The PCB architecture is bifurcated into a first board carrying common circuit components in a surface mount configuration suitable for high volume production, and a second board carrying application specific circuit components in a wave soldered stick mount configuration.

    Abstract: A marine propulsion system is provided with a gear shifting apparatus and method that changes a transmission from a low gear to a high gear, and vice versa, based solely on the engine speed. Engine speed is measured and a rate of change of engine speed is determined as a function of the actual change in engine speed over a measured time interval. Several threshold magnitudes are preselected and used to define one or more engine speed ranges. At least one threshold magnitude is used to compare the actual rate of change of engine speed to a preselected value. Both up shifting and down shifting of a transmission are controlled as a function of engine speed and rate of change of engine speed.

    Abstract: The disclosure relates to a method of laying a seabed pipeline from a surface vessel (10, 11) in which the vertically oriented lengths of pipe are assembled to form pipe strings suspended vertically from the vessel extending towards the seabed. An end (30) of a previously laid length of pipeline(29) is supported above the seabed by a tether (28) extending to the surface vessel to locate an upwardly facing end of the pipeline at a predetermined level below the vessel corresponding generally to the length of the pre-assembled pipe strings. A further pipe string (31) is then maneuvered from the vessel until the lower end of the string is aligned with the end of the pipeline, after which the pipe string is lowered to engage its lower end with the upwardly facing end of the pipeline.

    Abstract: The disclosure relates to a method of laying a seabed pipeline from a surface vessel. Pipe strings are assembled from their upper ends from the vessel for attachment in a pipeline extending from the vessel to the seabed. An upper end of a pipe string is attached to a trailing end of a pipeline, the pipeline is guided through a generally semi-circular curved path having an upwardly directed entry and a downwardly directed exit from where the pipeline extends to the seabed. The vessel is moved forwardly while guiding the pipeline around said curved path so that the pipe string passes around the path and is then released in a downwards direction towards the seabed until the trailing end of the pipe string is above sea level.
