Abstract: The present invention generally relates to a method for therapeutic or prophylactic treatment of melioidosis and/or associated diseases in a subject in need thereof, comprising administering to said subject an effective amount of a pharmaceutical composition comprising either one ion selected from the group of the hypothiocyanites (OSCN?) and/or hypohalites and/or lactoferrin or a combination thereof. The present invention also generally relates to methods of treating or preventing various bacterial infections selected from the group consisting of Burkholderia pseudomallei, Burkholderia mallei, bacillus anthracis, Yersinia pestis, and francisella tularensis infections.
