  • Patent number: 6704485
Abstract: A method for reducing the hydrogen aging loss of silica optical fibers by irreversible reaction of the peroxide defects with deuterium is described. This method comprises the step of contacting the optical fiber with deuterium by exposure to a gas mixture containing deuterium at a temperature compatible with the fiber without exposing the fiber to any further activation, and subsequently the step of degassing the fiber in a neutral atmosphere. The invention relates further to a process of producing optical fibers with low hydrogen aging loss wherein an optical fiber is treated using the method for reducing the hydrogen aging loss. Finally, the invention relates to optical fibers with low hydrogen aging loss obtainable by this process and telecommunication cables produced using these optical fibers. Using the new method, an activation step using intense light and/or elevated temperature is not necessary to achieve the reaction of peroxide defects in silica with deuterium.

  • Patent number: 5456981
Abstract: A process for the manufacture of a fibrous texture for producing a composite material article. The fibrous texture is formed of a yarn comprising discontinuous fibers which are made of a refractory material or a precursor thereof. The discontinuous fibers are disposed parallel to one another, without twist. A covering yarn made of a fugitive material is disposed over the discontinuous fibers to provide integrity to the yarn. The covering yarn is eliminated after formation of the fibrous texture.

  • Patent number: 5203059
Abstract: In a portion of the preform to be made in which the preform is to be of reduced thickness by having a recess formed therein, a mask is interposed between pairs of adjacent layers, the mask being made of a thin film of material through which the needles can pass during needling while opposing the passage of significant quantities of fiber taken by the needles, and after it has been needled, each layer is cut out around a line corresponding to the outline of the recess in the preform at the level where the layer is situated in the preform. A mask situated between two cutout layers occupies an area that is not less than the area between the cutout lines of the two layers, such that the portions of the layers that are delimited by the cutout lines are not securely connected to the remainder of the preform by the needling, thereby enabling the recess to be formed after all the layers have been needled by withdrawing the cutout portions of the layers and by peeling off the masks.

  • Patent number: 4563174
Abstract: A device for mixing two components, at least one of them a liquid, has a barrel with a wide-open end receiving a tubular plunger having an extremity open toward the barrel. The plunger is provided at that extremity with a relatively rotatable plug, fitting slidably into the open barrel end, and forms an outlet for the contents of that plunger which can be opened or closed by such relative rotation whereby the plug/plunger assembly can be filled with one component and sealed before being introduced from above into the barrel loaded with the other component. Either the plug or the plunger consists of elastic material and the plunger or the barrel may be provided with a sealable discharge opening which can be fitted with a needle when the device is to be used as a syringe.
