  • Patent number: 5230788
Abstract: The disclosure relates to insulated metal substrates and to a process for producing these substrates. These substrates have an aluminium base, an insulant constituted by an alumina film obtained by anodizing at least one of the faces of said base and at least one metal film which is to be transformed by chemical etching into a network of conductors. The alumina film is formed by a uniform compact zone adhering to the aluminium and having a thickness in excess of 500 nm and a porous layer with a rough outer surface. The process of making these substrates includes a step during which at least one of the faces of the aluminium base undergoes a treatment in a porous anodization layer forming bath and then in a barrier anodization layer forming bath. The invention is used in the production of substrates for single face, double face, with metallized holes, and multilayer conductive circuits. The substrates produced have a planar or non-planar configuration, and may also have resistive networks.

  • Patent number: 5100737
Abstract: A multi-layer material comprises at least two layers of flexible material, including one layer based on electrically conductive, expanded recompressed graphite and another layer based on a metal, wherein the layer of graphite has at least one face thereof covered at every point by a layer of metal and in direct electrical contact with the layer of metal, and wherein the layer of metal is obtained by electrodeposition or by chemical deposit of at least one metal on the layer of graphite in such a way that the layer of metal adheres directly to the layer of graphite and closely matches the micro-relief thereof.

  • Patent number: 5032244
Abstract: An apparatus for the anodic treatment of aluminum alloy pistons used in internal combustion engines. The apparatus comprises at least two members applied symmetrically to the lateral cylindrical surface of the piston which are connected to a source of positive direct current. An electrode connected to a source of negative direct current and having at least one aperture therein is positioned adjacent the head portion of the piston which is to be treated. A deflector of electrically insulating material disposed generally parallel to and spaced from the electrode and having a circumference curved toward the electrode is provided with a central passage therethrough which receives the head portion of the piston, with the head portion being disposed opposite the electrode.

  • Patent number: 4898646
Abstract: This invention relates to a process for identifying the external surface or surfaces of an Al alloy of a homogeneous or composite material by electrochemical means. This method involves forming an anodic layer, in situ, on the products to be identified, by electrolysis under predetermined conditions and following or plotting the development of the voltage U at the terminals of the electrolyzer as a function of time t during an intentiostatic test. The shape and relative position of curves U=f(t), thus obtained, allows the various alloys tested to be identified from a comparison of the derived curve from a curve U=f(t) derived from a known sample. The present method has advantages over the earlier methods of marking in that it provides: non-destructive method employable in situ on products which may have large dimensions (coils, plates, sheets, etc.); almost instantaneous identification; high reliability; and is simple and economic to use.

  • Patent number: 4808276
Abstract: A method is disclosed for checking and obtaining in a moving mode the continuity of a metal covering on a metal wire of different nature belonging to the group of a wire being treated by a current strength and issuing from a covering bath and wire, the treatment of which is achieved and coming from a storage wheel. The method comprises continuously bringing the coated wire in contact with a volume of electrolyte solution chemically and physically inert with respect to the wire, and in which the sensitive part of a reference electrode is immersed, sliding the wire issuing from the volume against an electrical contact, measuring the electrical potential variations between the electrode and the contact, and when the potential current oscillates, noting the poorly covered wire and increasing the current strength on the wire being treated.

  • Patent number: 4759837
Abstract: The invention relates to a process and an apparatus for electrolytically depositing, in a moving mode, a continuous film of nickel on metal wire for electrical use. The process comprises using an activation bath and a nickel-plating bath in which the current density is reduced in the upstream portion of the nickel plating bath and/or the downstream portion of the activation bath and the acidity of the nickel-plating bath is so regulated as to develop the nickel in the form of strongly adhering globules of small diameter, which completely cover the wire. The reduction in the above mentioned current density and control in respect of the current density profile along the bath may be achieved by acting on the position of the electrodes in the bath and/or by interposing screens between the electrodes and the wire.
