  • Patent number: 10443321
Abstract: A downhole tool (30) particularly for controlling torque and torsion and also for absorbing/dampening vibration in a downhole string is provided and comprises an inner mandrel (1, 7, 11, 15) and an outer mandrel (14, 13, 12, 19) and a coupling mechanism (8) to couple the inner and the outer mandrel, the coupling mechanism comprising one or more longitudinally elongate members (8) acting between the inner and outer mandrel, wherein the one or more longitudinally elongate members are substantially fixed in their longitudinal length but substantially do not resist relative compressive longitudinal movement occurring between the inner and outer mandrels. The coupling mechanism is arranged such that compression of the inner and outer mandrels results in compression of the one or more longitudinally elongate members without necessarily resulting in relative rotation of the inner and outer mandrels.

  • Patent number: 6973978
Abstract: A drilling tool having an expandable bladder and a method for using the same are provided. The drilling tool includes a tool body having an interior cavity, a plurality of extendable arms coupled with the tool body, and an expandable bladder at least partially disposed within the interior cavity of the tool body. The expandable is operable to deploy the extendable arms from a retracted position relative to the exterior surface of the tool body to an extended position relative to the exterior surface of the tool body.

  • Publication number: 20020129937
Abstract: An apparatus and method for obtaining core samples from a wellbore includes bringing a substance in contact with the core sample. The substance is adapted to retain at least a portion of fluids recovered with the core sample. A receptacle such as a core barrel contains the substance and is inserted into the wellbore and receiving the core sample in the receptacle. The substance may be sealed in the receptacle by a dissolvable plug mechanism. The substance is transformable between a highly viscous state and a substantially solid matrix.

  • Patent number: 6425447
Abstract: A method and apparatus for handling a geological sample, such as a core from a formation. The formation may be a formation of an oil and/or gas well. The apparatus includes a container for receiving the sample and is characterized in that the container comprises at least one wall with a surface which can change its configuration in response to pressure changes. The method of handling a geological sample obtained includes providing a container for receiving the sample. The container has a surface which is capable of changing its configuration in response to pressure changes. The sample is introduced into the container, and the configuration of the surface is changed to contact the sample. The container is then withdrawn from the formation.
