  • Patent number: 5448665
Abstract: A wavelength-selective arrangement interacts with optical radiation propagating in a transmission medium. The arrangement includes a selector member made of a polar organic material which exhibits piezoelectric properties, the selector member having an interaction surface for interacting with the radiation. The selector member is provided with structure for propagating surface acoustic waves along the interaction surface so as to create a grating and thereby determine its interacting properties in relation to the wavelength of the radiation, in a selectively variable manner.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: July 11, 1994
Date of Patent: September 5, 1995
Assignee: British Telecommunications public limited company
Inventors: Stephen V. Kershaw, Stephen A. Cassidy, Philippos Pantelis, Richard A. Pethrick, Sandra Gilmour
  • Patent number: 4748074
Abstract: Non linear optical compositions contain a vinylidene fluoride copolymer and an additive having molecular optoelelectronic activity, e.g. methyl-N-(2,4-dinitrophenyl)-alaninate. Poled films derived from the composite display optoelectronic activity. There is a marked contrast with known techniques in which single crystals are utilized. The compositions are used to make laminates which display good waveguide properties.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: December 16, 1985
Date of Patent: May 31, 1988
Assignee: British Telecommunications Public Limited Company
Inventors: Philippos Pantelis, Graham J. Davies

  • Patent number: 4557880
Abstract: Film with piezoelectric and pyroelectric properties is obtained by extruding PVDF, stretching the extrudate and applying a corona discharge, preferably at the place where stretching occurs. The PVDF may be homopolymer, but copolymers of at least 50 mole % of vinylidene fluoride with tetrafluoroethylene and/or trifluoroethylene may be used.

  • Patent number: 4239608
Abstract: A method of enhancing the piezoelectric properties of a polymeric material exhibiting such properties includes the step of exposing the material to a quantity of .gamma. radiation lying within the range of from 1 Mrad to 200 Mrads. The material is subsequently poled. Best results are obtained when the material is exposed to between 1 Mrad and 100 Mrads of radiation. The material treated may be polyvinylidene fluoride.
