Patent number: 7854736Abstract: A surgical instrument comprises a hollow tube (18) having a cutting window (16) at the distal end portion. An inner tube (15) is disposed within the tube (18) and is mounted for rotation about its longitudinal axis. A cutting tool (17) is located at the distal end of the tube (15), and is positioned adjacent to the cutting window (16). An outer tube (14) is provided over the tube (18). A motor (5) is provided for rotating the inner tube (15), and saline is fed to the cutting window (16) via a passageway (25) between the tubes (15) and (18). The inner tube (15) has a central lumen (24) through which tissue cut by the cutting tool (17) is removed under the action of a source of suction (12). The outer surface of the tube 18 is covered with an electrically insulating layer (22) and coagulating RF signals are supplied between the tube (18) and the outer tube (14) so as to coagulate tissue at the cutting window (16).Type: GrantFiled: January 15, 2010Date of Patent: December 21, 2010Assignee: Gyrus Ent, L.L.C.Inventor: Phillip Andrew Ryan

Publication number: 20040243163Abstract: A rotary tissue-cutting instrument forming a laryngeal blade (3) includes an outer tubular member (14) having a hub (4), a proximal portion (150) having a longitudinal axis and extending distally from said hub to a proximal bend (151) curving in a first direction. An intermediate portion (152) extends distally at an angle to the longitudinal axis of said proximal portion (150) in a first plane. The intermediate section extends from the proximal bend (151) to a distal bend (153) curving in a second direction, and a distal portion (154) extends distally from the distal bend (153) in a second plane. The distal portion (154) extends to a distal end having an opening (16) therein. An inner member (15) is rotatably disposed in the outer tubular member (14) and has a proximal end for mounting to a powered handpiece and a distal cutting tip (17) disposed adjacent the opening (16), the inner member being flexible adjacent said distal and proximal bends.Type: ApplicationFiled: March 11, 2004Publication date: December 2, 2004Applicant: GYRUS ENT L.L.CInventors: Roy R. Publication number: 20040147909Abstract: A surgical instrument comprises a probe (3) including an elongate hollow outer member (14) having a cutting window (16) at its distal end portion. An elongate drive shaft (15) is disposed within the outer member (14) and is mounted for rotation about its longitudinal axis within the probe. A cutting tool (17) is located at the distal end of the drive shaft, and is positioned adjacent to the cutting window (16). An indicia in the form of an etched marking (18) runs proximally along the outer member (14) in alignment with the center of the cutting window (16). The indicia allows the user of the instrument to ascertain the position of the cutting window (16), whatever the orientation of the probe (3).Type: ApplicationFiled: November 10, 2003Publication date: July 29, 2004Applicant: GYRUS ENT L.L.C.Inventors: Constance Elaine Johnston, Phillip Andrew Ryan, Perry Robin Mykleby
