Patent number: 11299191Abstract: Systems and methods of shielding a hand sensor system in a steering wheel are disclosed herein. An exemplary hand sensor system includes a sensor mat and a heater mat that is disposed between the sensor mat and a frame of the steering wheel. A power source selectively provides a heating current to the heater mat to provide heat to the steering wheel and a shielding voltage signal to the heater mat to provide electrical shielding for the sensor mat when heating is not needed or when sensing takes priority over heating. Alternatively, the system may include a shield mat that is separate from the heater mat and is disposed between the sensor mat and the heater mat. In addition, to isolate the signal carried by individual sensor return wires, a metallic or insulating covering or conduit may be provided around the wires or portions thereof.Type: GrantFiled: November 2, 2018Date of Patent: April 12, 2022Assignee: Joyson Safety Systems Acquisition LLCInventors: Dwayne Van'tZelfde, Phillip Bernard Maguire, Justin Richard McCurdy

Publication number: 20210245630Abstract: An occupant detection system includes a controller, a sensing electrode, and a shield electrode, the electrodes disposed in a vehicle seat. The controller is electrically coupled to the sensing electrode and shield electrode by a sensing circuit. The controller is configured to send an input signal to the sensing electrode, the shield electrode, or both and measures current, impedance, or capacitance values to determine the presence of an object on the seat, to classify the object, or both.Type: ApplicationFiled: February 22, 2021Publication date: August 12, 2021Inventors: Phillip Bernard Maguire, Daniel Tabar, David Haggitt, Jeffrey Bennett

Patent number: 11067989Abstract: An apparatus, method and computer program product are provided to facilitate the navigation of a vehicle, such as an autonomous vehicle, utilizing map data in which the quality associated with the map data is provided in a more computationally efficient manner. In the context of a method a plurality of different types of sensor data are received including map data, camera data and detector data. The method determines a quality index associated with the map data and weights the reliance upon the map data relative to other types of sensor data based upon the quality index associated with the map data. The method further includes determining navigation information for the vehicle based at least partly upon the weighting of the map data relative to other types of sensor data.Type: GrantFiled: September 10, 2019Date of Patent: July 20, 2021Assignee: HERE GLOBAL B.V.Inventors: Belle Walker, Uyen Nguyen, Daniel Weinstein, Pamela Korda, Xin Chen, David Doria, Phillip Bernard, Ralf Herrtwich

Patent number: 8971855Abstract: An activation of a wireless device for network service on a home network of the carrier or service provider with which a user subscribes or intends to subscribe can be implemented over an alternate wireless network, e.g., a network of another wireless carrier. A data communication containing a request for activation is received from a non-activated wireless device via the alternate wireless network on a server configured to provide activation. The data communication is compared to one or more activation criteria. Upon determining, based on the comparison, that the content meets the one or more activation criteria, an activation data packet for activation of the non-activated wireless device is sent to the non-activated wireless device over the home wireless network and over the alternate wireless network.Type: GrantFiled: December 18, 2012Date of Patent: March 3, 2015Assignees: Verizon Patent and Licensing Inc., Cellco PartnershipInventors: Phillip Bernard Jackson, John Antypas, III

Patent number: 8699683Abstract: An exemplary extended dialing plan allows use of one or more special characters, such as the # digit and the * digit, as dialable digits. The telecommunications network receives a string of characters representing a destination address from a first communication device, for use in routing a communication through the network to a second communication device. The received string of characters includes a number digit in the first position in the string and at least one non-numerical special character in another position. The character string is received from the first communication device by the network, the character string is analyzed and used to route the communication through the telecommunication network to the destination address based at least in part on the character string with at least one non-numerical special character.Type: GrantFiled: December 30, 2010Date of Patent: April 15, 2014Assignee: Cellco PartnershipInventor: Phillip Bernard Jackson
