    Abstract: The invention is a method for reducing halide content of a synthesis gas stream by mixing a metal compound of potassium oxide, potassium hydroxide, potassium bicarbonate, potassium carbonate, sodium oxide, sodium hydroxide, sodium bicarbonate, or sodium carbonate, with a carbonaceous feed material which contains halide-containing compounds; gasifying the carbonaceous feed material in an entrained flow gasifier under gasifying conditions thus producing a synthesis gas containing hydrogen and carbon monoxide; where the metal compound vaporizes and the vaporized metal compound reacts with the halide from the halide-containing compounds, thus producing a vaporized metal halide; cooling the vaporized metal halide, thus producing solid metal halide particles; passing the synthesis gas stream to a solids removal unit for removing the solid metal halide particles; and recovering the synthesis gas stream substantially free of halide-containing compounds.

    Abstract: The invention is a process for quenching a first synthesis gas mixture containing synthesis gas, molten flyash, water, and carbon dioxide and producing additional synthesis gas consisting of (a) passing the first synthesis gas mixture into a first quench zone; (b) introducing into the quench zone a mixture of pulverized coal in a nitrogen or carbon dioxide carrier gas; (c) endothermically reacting the pulverized coal with the water and the carbon dioxide in the synthesis gas mixture thus producing additional synthesis gas consisting of hydrogen and carbon dioxide and wherein the additional synthesis gas is admixed with the first synthesis gas mixture to form a second synthesis gas mixture; (d) passing the second synthesis gas mixture to a second quench zone; (e) introducing into the second quench zone a cooling gas for admixture with the second synthesis gas mixture, thus cooling the second synthesis gas mixture, where the molten flyash is solidified, and thus forms a third synthesis gas mixture; and (f) pass

    Abstract: A filtration apparatus is described wherein entrained solids are removed from particulate-carrying fluid by filtration under vigorous conditions with filter tubes. The filter apparatus comprises a plurality of tiers of filters, each tier comprising filter tubes supported on a tube sheet. The apparatus also contains a tiered conical sluicing system to concentrate and centralize the particulates. The solids discharge from the filter tubes and pass through the sluicing system to exit the apparatus through particulate outlet means. The use of the apparatus is characterized by a reduced re-entrainment of particulates in the fluid leaving the apparatus.

    Abstract: An improved one stage, upflow process for coal gasification whereby a dry particulate carbonaceous material and an oxygen-containing gas are combusted in a vertical gasifier thereby converting the carbonaceous material (coal) into a hot gas. The hot, entrained flyslag gas is then contacted with a cooled, recycled gas in a quench zone, thus cooling the gaseous product stream and causing the molten slag particles to convert to nonsticky flyslag particles. The high level thermal energy from the flyslag-laden gaseous product stream is recovered in a fire tube heat exchanger and the flyslag particles from the gaseous product stream are separated by conventional means and recycled back to the gasifier. The product raw gas is further treated for use in a gas turbine to produce electricity.

    Abstract: The invention is a method for reducing the hydrogen chloride content of a synthesis gas stream by (a) gasifying a carbonaceous feed material in an entrained flow gasifier to produce a gas/solids mixture of hydrogen, carbon monoxide, hydrogen chloride gas, and flyslag particles; (b) passing the gas/solids mixture solids removal zone where at least a portion of the flyslag particles are removed, to produce a gas stream; (c) mixing with the gas stream an alkali metal oxide, hydroxide, bicarbonate, or carbonate to produce a metals/gas mixture; (d) passing the metals/gas mixture to a ceramic candle filter; (e) reacting on the surface of the ceramic candle filter the alkali metal compounds with the hydrogen chloride to produce solid alkali metal chloride; and (f) recovering a gas stream from the ceramic candle filter substantially free of hydrogen chloride and solids.
