Abstract: A laser radar capable of measuring range to a target at many simultaneous points and with variable resolution is disclosed. Unlike conventional range sensors the device does not require short optical pulses or high electronics bandwidths to function. The disclosed invention uses frequency-modulated CW (FMCW) lasers, coherent detection, and low bandwidth video cameras to simultaneously measure range to a large number of points. The invention further permits varying the range resolution, range depth coverage, and eliminating Doppler induced range ambiguities by varying the frequency modulation parameters.
