  • Patent number: 5018285
Abstract: A method of constructing a prosthetic implant including a porous pad separate from the stem of the implant and in which the pad is wrapped around the stem for attachment thereto. The pad is first precontoured into a preliminary shape and is then wrapped about the stem in a second and final shape corresponding to the shape of the stem portion about which it is wrapped and subsequently secured.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: January 16, 1990
Date of Patent: May 28, 1991
    Assignee: Zimmer, Inc.
Inventors: Arden R. Zolman, Phillip J. Andersen, Steven T. Bayne

  • Patent number: 4863475
Abstract: An implantable prosthesis including a base member, such as the stem of a hip joint prosthesis, having a porous region on its surface, and the region of porosity being coated with a bioabsorbable material, such as .alpha.-tricalcium phosphate, which enhances permanent bone ingrowth into the region. A method of manufacture of the prosthesis includes the steps of providing a coating material and applying the material to at least a portion of the porous surface of the base member, while providing energy sufficient to transform the material to a state in which it is bioabsorbable. In the preferred embodiment the material is plasma sprayed onto the porous surface of the base member.
