    Abstract: A method for use in the construction of a color display screen using deposition of a plurality of electroluminescent materials onto a substrate bearing said screen. The method comprises the forming operations a), b), and c) in any sequence: a) forming on the substrate a first pattern of deposition sites covered with a first material selectively strippable by a first agent; b) forming on the substrate a second pattern of deposition sites covered with a second material strippable by a second agent but not significantly attacked by said first agent; and c) forming on the substrate a matrix surrounding the first and second patterns of deposition sites. The method includes thereafter performing a first stripping of the first material with the first agent to reveal first deposition sites within the matrix and performing a first depositing of a first electroluminescent material within the first revealed deposition sites.

    Abstract: An improved cataphoretic process is disclosed for use in the manufacture of a color cathode ray tube. The process provides for depositing in sequence on the tube screening surface at least two separate patterns of phosphor elements, with each pattern of elements capable of emitting light of a different color when excited. The process according to the invention comprises first depositing an electrically conductive coating over the screening surface for use as an electrode during each deposition operation. Second, an electrically insulative barrier is deposited over the conductive coating. Portions of the barrier are removed selectively and sequentially for controlling patterned, sequenced cataphoretic access to the electrically conductive coating.

    Abstract: A low-cost, deeply filtered television imge display is depicted. A viewing screen includes a patterned layer of phosphor particles disposed contiguous to the inner surface of the display. The layer when excited emits light of a predetermined color. The display includes means for exciting selected areas of the layer to produce a luminescent informational image. The image is subject to loss of contrast caused by reflection of ambient light from the layer. The improvement comprises a shallow, random, clumped, discontinuous, open dispersion of contrast-enhancing particles of pigment having a body color corresponding generally to the predetermined color disposed directly on the viewing screen beneath the layer and not significantly admixed with the phosphor particles. The percentage of open area of the dispersion of pigment particles and the absorption characteristics thereof are such that the dispersion efficiently filters ambient light at its interface with the layer.

    Abstract: This disclosure sets forth a process for electrophoretically depositing patterns of image-related compounds on the inner surface of the faceplate of shadow-mask-type television cathode ray picture tubes. The process comprises the depositing of a pattern of groups of periodically repeating electrically conductive stripes of predetermined graduated length from relatively long to relatively short. Both ends of stripes of similar length, starting with the relatively long stripes, are electrically excited with a charge of a first polarity by means of conductive contact strips during immersion in an electrolytic bath including an image-related compound having particles charged with a potential opposite in polarity to said first polarity for electrophoretic deposition of the particles on the stripes.
