  • Patent number: 8676475
Abstract: A method is provided for regenerating a diesel particulate filter within a diesel engine system that includes, but is not limited to at least a combustion chamber defined by a reciprocating piston inside a cylinder, at least an exhaust valve for cyclically open the combustion chamber towards an exhaust line, and the diesel particulate filter located in the exhaust line, wherein the method comprises injecting an amount of fuel into the combustion chamber by means of least two consecutive after-injection pulses (AIP1-AIP3), each of which starts (SOI) after the piston has passed the top dead center (TDC), and sufficiently near to the latter for the fuel to burn at least partially inside the combustion chamber.

Date of Patent: March 18, 2014
Assignee: GM Global Technology Operations LLC

  • Publication number: 20060236686
Abstract: The process includes the operations of: arranging a particular filter (PT) in the exhaust duct (EP), generating, by indicator devices (S1-S5), electrical signals indicative of the values of parameters (NQ) of the operation of the engine (ICE); performing filter regeneration phases of the filter (PT) by controlling the injectors (I1-I4) of the engine (ICE) in such a way as to cause a controlled increase in the temperature of the exhaust gas so as to cause combination of the particulates accumulated in the filter (PT), identifying on the basis of signals provided by at least some of the indicator devices (S1-S5) the type of journey or trip (MPi) currently being made by the motor vehicle form among a plurality of predefined types of journey or trip (MP1-MP4); calculating, according to a predefined estimation function, and in dependence on the instantaneous type of journey or trip (MPi), the quantity (Q) of particulates gradually accumulated in the filter (PT); and starting a filter regenerating phase of the filt

  • Patent number: 6666020
Abstract: A method of initiating regeneration of a particulate filter for a diesel engine having a common rail injection system permitting, at each engine cycle and in each cylinder of the engine, a fuel injection strategy performing one or more of the following injections; a main injection; a first pre-injection preceding the main injection and performed at the compression stroke; a second pre-injection preceding the main injection and following the first pre-injection; a first post-injection following the main injection; and a second post-injection following the first post-injection and performed at the exhaust stroke; the second pre-injection and the first post-injection being performed close enough to the main injection to participate, together with the main injection, in the actual fuel combustion phase, and wherein the timing of one or more of the injections performed is varied with respect to the timing of the injections in particulate filter non-regenerating conditions.
