  • Publication number: 20090156195
Abstract: A method, performed by an access point of a cellular network, obtains time information by identifying a control channel cycle boundary; at a beginning of the control channel cycle boundary, sending a request to a time server; receiving a response from the time server, the request including a server time; and obtaining the timing information using the server time. Obtaining the timing information includes using the server time and a first reference time to obtain an integer and a fraction; using the fraction to obtain a time difference; and using the time difference to obtain the timing information.

  • Publication number: 20070155329
Abstract: A device causes at least one access terminal that is configured to transmit datal to a radio node in a sector of a radio access network to alter transmission. While transmission is altered, the device determines a power of a signal received at the radio node, and updates an average value of signal power using the power measured. A device receives, from one or more access terminals that are configured to receive data from a radio node in a sector of a radio access network, a requested rate at which information should be transmitted to each access terminal, receives from the access terminals information about quality of signals received from the radio node, and generates an event if the requested rate and the information about quality of signals fail to satisfy a condition. An access terminal, located in the vicinity of a first radio node configured to transmit data in a sector of a radio access network, measures signal power of pilot signals received by the access terminal.

  • Patent number: 6992978
Abstract: A system and method for fast and reliable failure notification and accelerated switchover for path protection in a communications network having several overlapping areas of nodes interconnected by communications links is described. Upon a failure event involving one of the communications links, a failure message is broadcast identifying the failed link, the broadcast being confined within the areas which include the failed link. A reliable transmission protocol is provided wherein at one or more of the nodes, a LAPD protocol unnumbered information frame containing the failure message is sent to connected nodes. The failure message is resent in another unnumbered information frame after a time interval unless an unnumbered acknowledgment frame containing or referencing the failure message is received from the connected node. A method of path protection includes establishing plural working paths through the nodes. For each working path, an associated protection path is precalculated.

  • Patent number: 6466577
Abstract: A mechanism for providing point-to-point and point-to-multipoint connections in an ATM network converts VPI/VCI information at an ingress ATM device on incoming cells from a source endpoint to internal VP/VCI information that is used to switch the cells through an ATM network to an egress ATM device. At the egress ATM device, the internal VPI/VCI information is converted back to the source VPI/VCI information for transmission of cells to the destination endpoint. In such a manner, an ATM switch network is able to provide point-to-point connections without requiring individual configuration of VPI/VCI information at the ingress and egress ATM devices.

  • Patent number: 5875229
Abstract: A system and device for, and method of, detecting, characterizing, and mitigating deterministic distortion in a communication system. An exemplary communication system includes a digital adaptor for sending octets on to a backbone of a PSTN, which then sends, and potentially distorts the octets, received by a line interface. The line interface converts the octets to baseband signals received by an analog adaptor. Several mechanisms and methods are described in which the analog and digital adaptor cooperate to detect the presence of distortion, in particular, robbed bit signaling, on the communication system. The characterization may then be used to mitigate the effects of the distortion. Several receive constellations are provided, each constructed in view of the transmit constellation and in view of the manner in which the deterministic distortion will distort signals transmitted over the system. The receive constellations differ from the transmit constellation.

  • Patent number: 5812602
Abstract: System and Device for, and Method of, Communicating According to a Trellis Code of Baseband Signals Chosen from a Fixed Set of Baseband Signal Points. Signal points are chosen from a fixed set of signal points, such as exists in the baseband signal points found in PSTN companding algorithms. These signal points are assingned to subsets and transmitted according to a predefined transmitter state sequence, representable as a trellis diagram. The subsets may overlap by sharing signal points. The sharing of signal points improves the transmission performance of the arrangement in comparison to conventional disjoint sets. The signal points are selected and associated with subsets, such that the signal points transmittable from a given transmitter states maintain a minimum distance of d, even though the full combination of signal points of all subsets need not satisfy a minimum distance of d/2.

  • Patent number: 5128798
Abstract: Apparatus is described for achieving wavelength selection. Furthermore, the apparatus exhibits very high wavelength resolution, stable operation and rapid returning. A bundle of multi-wavelength light, entering the device, is acoustooptically deflected. This is done by driving two orthogonal acoustic transducrs of the deflector with two suitable frequencies fx and fy. The light so deflected passes first through a wedge etalon having a taper along the X-axis and then through a second wedge etalon having a taper along the Y-axis. The pair of wedges forms two, single-cavity etalons. Depending on the choice of fx and fy, any wavelength within the wavelength range covered by the two, single-cavity etalons can be selected rapidly and accurately.
