  • Patent number: 7253904
Abstract: To measure the characteristics of the surface coating of a moving metal strip, such as the alliation level of a coating including zinc and iron, the product is exposed to the radiation of a radiative source with a predetermined wavelength directed orthogonally to the surface of the product and the energy reflected by the surface is measured also in a direction orthogonal to the surface so as to overcome reflectivity variations due to the morphological characteristics of the surface and these operations are performed with the help of off-the-shelf optical fibres previously stripped at their free ends of their normal optical focusing accessories so that they can be brought as near to each other as possible and placed parallel to each other.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: July 29, 2003
Date of Patent: August 7, 2007
    Assignee: Usinor

  • Patent number: 6395407
Abstract: A metallic sheet with an aluminum coating, the coating having an internal layer of iron/aluminum/silicon alloys, and an external layer, thicker, of an aluminum-based phase and secondarily of phases in the form of needles or elongated lamellae. The projection of the length of all needles or lamellae in a direction perpendicular to the plane of the external layer is less than the thickness of this layer. This structure, which is obtained by a thermal treatment of the external layer at a temperature of 570-660° C., notably for less than 15 sec, considerably decreases the risks of cracking.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: September 4, 2001
Date of Patent: May 28, 2002
    Assignee: Sollac

  • Patent number: 6207299
Abstract: A coating layer for sheet metal is provided that is comprised of an aluminum-silicon alloy having low emissivity. The coated sheet metal may be used as heat shield material, particularly for heat sources having temperatures greater than 500° C., which sources may be, e.g., the hotter parts of the conduits of automotive exhaust systems. The sheet metal may be sheet steel coated on at least one of its principal surfaces with a layer of a coating comprised of an alloy of silicon in the amount of 7-11 wt. % and aluminum in the amount of 87-93 wt. %. The coated surface of the sheet has a monochromatic emissivity less than 0.15 for all wavelengths in the range of 1.5-15 microns.
