The powdered material has adsorbed a high proportion by weight of the liquid active ingredient while maintaining characteristics of a solid. The liquid active ingredient and the powdered material are compressed to form a tablet. To make the tablet, the liquid active ingredient is mixed with the powdered material in a proportion that retains solid properties. A binder is added to the solid-like substance to form a combination. The combination is granulated to form granules. The granules are compressed to form tablets. The material may also be disposed in capsules.

Abstract: A pharmaceutical composition includes a therapeutic amount of an active ingredient and at least one gel-forming granule. The gel-forming granule forms a gel when exposed to an aqueous liquid and is coated with an outer coating that is sufficiently brittle so that when the tablet is crushed, a portion of the outer coating will break open so as to expose the gel-forming granule. The outer coating includes a material that resists dissolution when exposed to gastric fluids.

Abstract: A pharmaceutical composition in a plurality of units includes ibuprofen, in a concentration of between 10% and 84%, by weight, of each of the plurality of units, and a narcotic analgesic, of which each of the plurality of units includes between 1 mg to 60 mg of the narcotic analgesic. Other ingredients include: a disintegrant, in a concentration of between 0.25% to 15% by weight of each of the plurality of units; a filler, in a concentration of between 2% to 90% by weight of each of the plurality of units; and a binder, in a concentration of between 0.25% to 20% by weight of each of the plurality of units.
