Patent number: 6341722Abstract: The present invention provides a feeder of molten metal for moulds of continuous casting machines comprising a cylindrical body (1) within which a main outflow duct (5) of the molten metal coming from the tundish is formed to which the cylindrical body (1) is connected by means of a frustoconical joint (2), formed integrally with the cylindrical body (1) at the upper end thereof, characterized in that the free end (3) of the cylindrical body (1) is of substantially frustopyramid shape and has a plurality of outlets (7, 8, 9, 10, 11) communicating with the main outflow duct (5).Type: GrantFiled: October 26, 1999Date of Patent: January 29, 2002Assignees: Acciai Speciali Terni S.p.A., Voest-Alpine Industrieanlagenbau GmbHInventors: Pietro Tolve, Franco Macci, Romeo Capotosti

Patent number: 5445211Abstract: Rolls are provided for a strip continuous casting machine. Each roll has an outer cylindrical surface and two flat bases attached perpendicular to the rotational axis of each roll. Each base has an annular reinforcing element positioned on the edge between the base and the cylindrical surface. The annular element is made of at least one flange having a material resistant to the wear caused by mutual contact between the surface of the rolls and the confinement plates.Type: GrantFiled: March 17, 1993Date of Patent: August 29, 1995Assignee: Centro Sviluppo Materiali S.p.A.Inventors: Pietro Tolve, Riccardo Tonelli, Romeo Capotosti

Patent number: 5273103Abstract: In vertical thin-bodies continuous casting machines in which the liquid metal is cast in a mold formed by a pair of counter-rotating rolls with parallel longitudinal axes lying in the same horizontal plane and by a pair of containment plates facing onto the flat ends of the rolls, an electromagnetic device is introduced which produces a field of electromagnetic forces in a desired and given space formed between the plates and roll ends, the orientation and intensity of the forces being such as to impede leakage of liquid metal between the plates and the rolls. With this device the contact between plates and rolls is eliminated, as is the relative wear. Moreover, flat metal products are obtained that are substantially free from surface defects on the edges. Lastly, the absence of flashes on the edges due to metal infiltrating and solidifying between plates and rolls markedly decreases the possibility of jamming the machine.Type: GrantFiled: April 14, 1992Date of Patent: December 28, 1993Assignee: Centro Sviluppo Materiali S.p.A.Inventors: Pietro Tolve, Riccardo Tonelli, Emanuele Picco

Patent number: 4756749Abstract: A process of continuous casting of liquid steel from a tundish having a plurality of casting holes through which liquid steel moves downwardly into a plurality of strands. The liquid steel is discharged into the tundish from a ladle and moves in opposite directions toward two adjacent holes from at least one node comprising a point from which liquid steel moves in different directions toward different holes. The liquid steel is subjected to the heating effect of a heat source at at least one such node. The heat source is a transferred arc plasma torch.Type: GrantFiled: December 8, 1986Date of Patent: July 12, 1988Assignee: Centro Sviluppo Materiali S.p.A.Inventors: Alberto Praitoni, Pietro Tolve

Patent number: 4645534Abstract: A process for controlling continuous casting conditions in steel tapped from a furnace, which proceeds from a ladle into a tundish, and then via a submerged nozzle to a continuous casting mold. In either the ladle or the tundish, the liquid steel is subjected to radiation heating and convection heating from an electric heating device by which an electric current is made to pass through the liquid steel from this heating device to a return located downstream of the device, for example in the continuous casting mold. Preferably, the heating device is a transferred arc plasma torch. In addition, the nozzle between the tundish and the continuous casting mold is subjected not only to the passage of current but also to a direct magnetic field perpendicular to the steel stream.Type: GrantFiled: October 22, 1985Date of Patent: February 24, 1987Assignee: Centro Sperimentale Metallurgico S.p.A.Inventors: Renato D'Angelo, Aldo Ramacciotti, Eugenio Repetto, Pietro Tolve
