  • Patent number: 8315805
Abstract: Systems and methods for testing samples, particularly biological samples are provided. The system includes an instrument for detecting molecules in samples, and a processor that communicates with the instrument to provide results-based control of the instrument to effect assay-based judging. For example, a system, including software, is provided that directs and performs assays such as diagnostic assays that employ a mass spectrometer. The output of the system, rather than a mass spectrum or other raw data form, is the diagnostic outcome, such as a genotype.

  • Patent number: 8092645
Abstract: During detachment of a die from an adhesive tape, the inner and outer portions of a first side of the die which is in contact with the adhesive tape is supported with a support surface. A collet contacts the inner and outer portions of a second side of the die opposite to the first side. Support is withdrawn from the outer portion of the die such that the outer portion of the second side of the die bends away from the collet while the support surface only supports the inner portion of the die. Vacuum suction from the collet is applied to attract the outer portion of the die towards the collet and the vacuum suction pressure is monitored until a threshold pressure is reached indicating that the outer portion of the die is contacting the collet. Thereafter, the collet is lifted while holding the die with vacuum suction to completely separate the die from the adhesive tape.

  • Patent number: 7917301
Abstract: The method and system for identifying a biological sample generates a data set indicative of the composition of the biological sample. In a particular example, the data set is DNA spectrometry data received from a mass spectrometer. The data set is denoised, and a baseline is deleted. Since possible compositions of the biological sample may be known, expected peak areas may be determined. Using the expected peak areas, a residual baseline is generated to further correct the data set. Probable peaks are then identifiable in the corrected data set, which are used to identify the composition of the biological sample. In a disclosed example, statistical methods are employed to determine the probability that a probable peak is an actual peak, not an actual peak, or that the data are too inconclusive to call.

  • Publication number: 20070003996
Abstract: Bacteria can be identified by analyzing a data stream that is obtained by processing a sample containing the bacteria, where the data stream has been abstracted to produce a sample vector that characterizes the data stream in a predetermined vector space containing at least one diagnostic cluster, the diagnostic cluster being associated with bacteria of known type, and by determining whether the sample vector rests with the diagnostic cluster, and if the sample rests within the diagnostic cluster, an indication that the bacteria are of the known type can be provided.

  • Publication number: 20030207297
Abstract: A method for discovery of a polymorphism in a population is provided. The method includes the steps of obtaining samples of body tissue or fluid from a plurality of organisms; isolating a biopolymer from each sample; pooling each isolated biopolymer; optionally amplifying the amount of biopolymer; cleaving the pooled biopolymers to produce fragments thereof; obtaining a mass spectrum of the resulting fragments; and comparing the frequency of each fragment to identify fragments present in amounts lower than the average frequency, thereby identifying any polymorphisms.

  • Publication number: 20020155587
Abstract: The method for testing a biological sample operates on a testing system. The testing system generally comprises an instrument that is configured to acquire data from a biological sample and a processor. In performing the method for testing, the instrument acquires data from the biological sample, and the processor compares the acquired data to predefined data criteria. Responsive to comparing the acquired data to the data criteria, the instrument may be adjusted, and another data set acquired. In one disclosed example of the testing system, a mass spectrometer acquires data from a biological sample. The acquired data is compared to predefined spectrum criteria. Responsive to the comparison, the mass spectrometer may be directed to resample the biological sample or proceed to another sample.
