Patent number: 9614211Abstract: Provided is a lithium ion battery including a battery can, a battery core received in the battery can, electrolyte filled in the battery can, and a battery cover assembled to the battery can. The battery can or the battery cover is provided with a pressure relief valve, and the pressure relief valve is coupled with a mesh cover defining a number of through holes therein. According to the present invention, when thermal runaway occurs to the lithium ion battery, the pressure relief valve breaks timely. Only gases and electrolyte vapor can pass through the mesh cover. Solid particles cannot pass through the mesh cover. Therefore, ignition of the flammable gases, the electrolyte vapor and the high temperature solid particles in the surrounding air afar from the pressure relief valve is avoided and the safety performance of the lithium ion battery can be improved remarkably.Type: GrantFiled: September 15, 2014Date of Patent: April 4, 2017Assignees: Ningde Amperex Technology Limited, Dongguan Amperex Technology LimitedInventors: Xiao bo Chen, Wei feng Chen, Qing feng Yuan, Ping hua Deng, Quan kun Li, Xue hui Wang, Wei zhong Wu

Patent number: 9118192Abstract: A battery pack has series-parallel connected battery cells. An inrush current limiting circuit has current limiting devices and a current limiting tracking means limits inrush current from shorted battery cells. Each current limiting tracking means is coupled to the current limiting devices such that they limit an inrush current from parallel neighbor battery cells when one battery cell on the column shorts. The current limiting devices are variable buffer resistors with a positive temperature coefficient. The current limiting tracking means are heat sinks that thermally couples the buffer resistors together such that the buffer resistors increase in resistance with a temperature increase caused by current flowing through the buffer resistor associated with the shorted battery cell. Current regulating elements are in series with columns of battery cells for preventing inrush current to the columns of the battery cells.Type: GrantFiled: August 29, 2011Date of Patent: August 25, 2015Assignee: Amperex Technology LimitedInventors: Li-Yan Zhu, Jei Wei Chang, Ping Hua Deng
