  • Publication number: 20010047133
Abstract: A system and method for tracking the position and orientation of a probe such as a catheter whose transverse inner dimension may be at most about two millimeters. Three planar antennas that at least partly overlap are used to transmit electromagnetic radiation simultaneously, with the radiation transmitted by each antenna having its own spectrum. In the case of single-frequency spectra, the antennas are provided with mechanisms for decoupling them from each other. A receiver inside the probe includes sensors of the three components of the transmitted field, with sensors for at least two of the three components being pairs of sensors, such as coils, disposed symmetrically with respect to a common reference point. In one variant of the receiver, the coils are collinear and are wound about cores that are mounted in pairs of diametrically opposed apertures in the housing of the probe.

  • Publication number: 20010038354
Abstract: A method of tracking translation and rotation of one or more objects within a region of interest. The method includes providing a passive transponder in the region of interest, the transponder having a position and an orientation, generating an electromagnetic field in the region of interest, causing the transponder to generate electromagnetic signal, mapping the electromagnetic field and the signal as functions of the position and the orientation of the transponder, fixing the transponder to the object being tracked, receiving the signals generated by the transponder while the transponder is fixed to the object being tracked, and processing the signal, with reference to the functions, to compute the three-dimensional translational position and three-axis rotational orientation of the object.

  • Patent number: 6188355
Abstract: A method for determining the position and orientation of an object with respect to a reference frame, made up of providing the object with three independent transmitters of electromagnetic radiation, providing three independent receivers of the electromagnetic radiation, each of the receivers having a fixed position in the reference frame, transmitting the electromagnetic radiation, using the transmitters, a first of the transmitters transmitting the electromagnetic radiation including at least a first frequency, a second of the transmitters transmitting the electromagnetic radiation including at least a second frequency different from the first frequency, and a third of the transmitters transmitting the electromagnetic radiation including at least a third frequency different from the first frequency, receiving signals corresponding to the electromagnetic radiation, at all three of the receivers, at a plurality of times, each of the signals including components of at least one of the three frequencies, for ea

  • Patent number: 5646524
Abstract: Apparatus for determining the position and orientation of a helmet worn by a crew member in a vehicle including a generator, associated with the vehicle, which produces a rotating magnetic and electric field of fixed strength, orientation and frequency within at least a portion of the vehicle. The apparatus also includes a plurality of detectors each of which generates a signal proportional to at least one of the electric or magnetic fields at least one point associated with the helmet and calculation circuitry responsive to the signal for ascertaining the coordinates of the at least one point with respect to the generator and for determining the position and orientation of the helmet.

  • Patent number: 5646785
Abstract: A helmet system having a visor attached to a support bracket mounted on a helmet wherein the support bracket is formed with an extension operative to block the visor from lifting upwards when the visor is pushed toward the helmet by wind pressure while not obstructing the normal circumferential movement of said visor in the absence of wind pressure.

  • Patent number: 5341242
Abstract: A display, for example, for a visor attached to a helmet, the visor having a partially reflecting semi-transparent portion in the view of the wearer and an optical projector for projecting an image onto the semi-transparent portion for reflection therefrom. The semi-transparent portion has a relatively higher reflectivity in a central area thereof and a relatively lower reflectivity in an annular area outside the central area. In one aspect of the invention, the head mounted display includes a projector having a display source whereon an image is formed and an optical system for focusing the image at separate sagittal and tangential foci between the image-forming surface and the semi-transparent portion.
