  • Patent number: 8353321
Abstract: A system and method for short-range ultrasonic detecting of a target is proposed herein to be used for example in a liquid-dispensing system such as those provided in home refrigerators. The system comprises a sensor assembly including a transmitter and a receiver positioned side by side so as to yield respective transmitting and receiving beams which overlap to define an asymmetrical shaped detection area, a controller coupled to both the transmitter and receiver to activate the transmitter and for receiving echoes indicative of the target from the receiver and to the dispensing system for opening a valve of the dispensing system when a target is detected. Noises and false alarm rate minimization methods are implemented, including variable relevance zones and requiring a void of signal before excitation.

  • Patent number: 7715276
Abstract: A presence detection system for level crossing or to detect a target at the intersection of any paths is described herein. The system comprises an ultrasound sensor array positioned at the intersection of the first and second paths for defining a detecting area thereon and for emitting a first trigger signal when the body is in the detecting area; and a controller coupled to the ultrasound sensor array for receiving the first trigger signal and for emitting an alarm signal indicative of the first trigger signal. The sensor array detects the presence of a target by creating acoustic virtual lines which form between emitter and receiver or transducer and reflectors and/or by deploying conical or parallel detecting beams and which can be used, for example to measure the distance between each sensor forming the array and the target. The sensor array can deploy beams or acoustic lines in several plans and therefore allow detecting penetration above the conventional railway crossing barriers.

  • Publication number: 20100018309
Abstract: An ultrasound system for measuring the fluid level in a tank includes means for emitting an ultrasound detecting beam towards a surface of the fluid in the tank from a first position relative to the tank, yielding at least a portion of a path of the ultrasound detecting beam being generally perpendicular to the bottom of the tank and defining an axis intersecting the bottom of the tank, the first position being adjacent the bottom of the tank; means for receiving echoes from the ultrasound detecting beam reflected from the surface of the fluid in the tank at a second position biased from the first position; and means for determining the fluid level using the echoes received from the ultrasound detecting beam and a distance between the first and second positions. Such a system allows eliminating the limitation caused by the transducers' dead zone without requiring the use of a waveguide.
