  • Patent number: 9138814
Abstract: A method for machining may include providing a workpiece with a major (e.g., top) surface and an edge at a perimeter thereof. The method may also include providing a machining tool including an outer rotary cutter and an inner rotary cutter. The workpiece may be machined in a single pass of the machining tool around the perimeter thereof. Machining the workpiece may include simultaneously machining the edge with the inner rotary cutter and machining at least a portion of the major surface with the outer rotary cutter. Accordingly, the edge and at least a portion of the major surface of the workpiece may be simultaneously machined in a single pass. The inner rotary cutter may also simultaneously machine an undercut at the edge of the workpiece. A related machining apparatus including the machining tool is provided. Further, a computer readable medium may include program code for performing the above-described operations.

  • Patent number: 9099856
Abstract: Brackets may be mated with or coupled to an opening of an electronic device enclosure or housing for receiving plug connectors to reinforce the receptacle connector and/or device housing and potentially reduce damage/breakage. For example, a bracket can have a front face with a curvature. A back face of the bracket can include a first opening that communicates with a cavity. The cavity can be defined at least in part by upper and lower opposing inner surfaces, the lower inner surface including a portion that extends parallel to a portion of the bracket front face. The bracket can also include a hollow protrusion extending from the bracket front face in a front direction. The hollow protrusion can include an opening that communicates with the opening of the back face and extends through the hollow protrusion. Methods for manufacturing the connector bracket are also provided.

  • Patent number: 9070313
Abstract: A cosmetic logo insert is adapted for fitting into an opening in the housing of an associated computing device, is formed from a single piece of metal, has a thickness less than about 0.8 mm, and provides by itself adequate shock impact and fire enclosure protection at the opening for internal device components. The insert can include a lower portion having a first circumferential shape in the form of a logo and an outer surface that is substantially flat and polished to a mirrored finish, and also an upper portion integrally formed with the lower portion and having a second circumferential shape that is larger than the first circumferential shape. A computing device can include an outer housing having a wall with a stepped and logo shaped opening, a processor located within the housing, and a cosmetic housing insert fitted into the wall opening.

  • Patent number: 9064200
Abstract: An apparatus for ejecting a flat object from a casing of a mobile device is disclosed. The apparatus is arranged to receive an ejection tool along a first axis and to eject the flat object along a second axis, wherein the first and second axes are not parallel. In one embodiment, the first axis is parallel to a top surface of the mobile device and the second axis is perpendicular to a curved edge surface of the mobile device.

  • Patent number: 9013888
Abstract: Systems and methods for ejecting removable entities from electronic devices are provided. A removable entity ejection system may include a driver that may be controllable by software (e.g., via a control unit that may be configured to send electrical signals to the driver). The driver may include a driving component that may apply a force directly, or indirectly, to one or more removable entities to eject the one or more removable entities from an electronic device. When the force is applied indirectly, one or more interfacing components may receive the applied force and may transfer the received force to the one or more removable entities to cause ejection thereof.

  • Publication number: 20140259627
Abstract: The embodiments described in this paper relate generally to a fastener configured to reduce a risk of doing damage to a high cost component. Various embodiments of fasteners configured to be threaded during insertion are described. This is accomplished by selecting a material for an engaging portion of the fastener that is soft enough to yield to a set of threads to which it is driven into. In this way, a complementary threading pattern is formed on an exterior surface of the fastener as it is twisted against threading of the high cost component to which the fastener is configured to be coupled.

  • Patent number: 8827611
Abstract: A free form cutting machine is disclosed. The free form cutting machine includes a table, a spindle; and a cutting arrangement attached to the spindle. The cutting arrangement having at least a cutting tool used to cutting selected portions from a workpiece on the table. The free form cutting machine causes the cutting tool to apply a continuous shaping force to the surface of the workpiece until a first surface shape of the workpiece conforms with a predefined finished spline surface shape.

  • Publication number: 20140112730
Abstract: The described embodiments relate generally to device housings and more particularly to methods for blending multiple surfaces of a device housing during a machining process. A method is disclosed that prevents the formation of steps and allows for a smooth transition between flat and curved surfaces by using a profile cutter with an obtuse angle. The profile cutter can extend into the area in which the flat surface is desired while angling upwards and away from the part. This angle can ensure that the boundary between the flat surfaces and curved surfaces forms a shallow peak rather than a step. A shallow peak can be relatively easier to blend during a polishing operation than a step. As a result, the boundaries between surfaces can be hidden from the user of the device and the manufacturing process can be more efficient.
